Does anyone have experience with synthetic oils for 2 stroke motors. I have a 94 20hp Johnson that I was wondering if it would be worth using it in.

I burn synthetic oil in all my two strokes. Less fouling of plugs as it burns cleaner. Some are biodegradeable. Offer better protection for your engine according to independent lab studies. Trade off is it is more expensive. Break in the engine with dino oil then switch over to synthetic.

I was using the FICHT RAM injection oil which was a blended oil. They now have a full synthetic oil. I switched to amsoil injection oil but have used a marine synthetic oil that I use to get at walmart for 19 a gallon. I suspect that your motor is premix? If so make sure you get premix synthetic not injection synthetic. On that old of motor you may want to decarb it before switching to help burn out old carbon deposits. You can pick up a can at any dealer.

Although it is a 94 it has very low hours, less than 40 when I bought it last year. Yes it is a premix and not oil injection. Since it realy doesnt use that much gas/oil I dont mind the extra expense.

I was thinking if I did a lot of trolling it would keep the crabon buildup down. Also that there would be less smoke when back trolling.

I switched to Amsoil in my Johnson 115 2 years ago, and I'm glad I did. It was only a buck more a gallon than the manufacturers TCW-3 oil at the dealer. A lot less smoke and NO fouling or deposits. In heavy wind/waves I used the 115 to troll, sometimes for hours and when I hit the gas she went without bogging, smoke filling the air, etc... The engine ran cooler too.
