There are many, many posts about trolling cranks. Can a person have success casting cranks? If so, do some work better than others? (I'm thinking of Husky Jerks and Wally Divers). When would a guy use this strategy? Any experience shared on this question would be appreciated.

Derrek, as one who does not enjoy trolling, I cast cranks often. Anytime of year, anytime of day, cranks CAN be an effective bait to cast.Spring and fall, I cast Rattlin' Rouges to weed beds. Summertime (generally dusk to dawn)I will cast a deep diving crayfish imitation around drop-offs and weedlines. When the water is cool, below 60 degrees, I find rattles significantly increase my catch rate. Above 60, it doesn't seem to matter whether the bait rattles or not. Wally Divers work well but I have not tried Huskey Jerks. I don't know why they wouldn't work. I have also found that you need to be flexible. Some lure types/colors work in some bodies of water while a totally different set-up works in another. Experiment and have fun. Pete

Absolutely. I do it all the time. Your casting lure selection can be determined by the water depth. Deep diving cranks work great when casted in deep water such as drop-offs, weed edges or any other location with the depth. Any place that can be trolled can be casted. They can even be fished shallow and bounced along the bottom if the bottom doesn't have to many snags.

Derek, there are a lot of different patterns for casting cranks and I use them quite often. Start with the river, casting wing dams is on of the most effective ways to catch fish, casting bombers or rattle tots works there. Go to the lakes or resovoirs, casting cranks to shorelines like you are flipping a jig, especially now, it is a good time to do it, you can cover some serious ground in a hurry. Find a wind swept shore line or a mud line and you should find some active fish, good luck

Derek, Another good spot to cast cranks is where creeks come into the main lake or where there is any current. This is an especially good tactic in spring but it works well all year long. The walleyes are in the creek mouths feeding on baitfish that are attracted to the area. I usaully use # 9, 11, 13 floating rapalas or thundersticks. Any type of stick bait will work. Another time I cast cranks is when I find the walleyes concentrated in a small area. A crankbait will target the aggressive fish. After I have caught the aggressive fish I will switch to a more finnese presentation such as a jig and a minnow or a live bait rig. Casting cranks is an often overlooked aspect of walleye fishing that can be very effective in the right situations.

Mille Lacs Guy knows that a crank bait is to walleye what a spinnerbait is to bass for finding active fish. I agree whether it be big water walleye or inland, crankbaits will help you find and catch fish.
