I have a 99 Four stroke Mercury kicker and need to change the oil before I drive all night for a trip, the kicker is due again and I don't have time to run to a dealer today - I live in the middle of BF Egypt. The manual sez the drain plug is on the back of the motor just above the lower unit. NADA, no screw or flip out spout as it describes.

I do see a large plug on the right side of the motor just below the powerhead as it faces forward. I suspect they must have changed the drain location and gave me the wrong book.

Is this the drain plug or where did it go. I would just call the dealer but I have a feeling this post may help someone else someday.

Thanks!

Too afraid to use real name.. lol

Look on the back of the engine, just below the cowl cover latch area there should be a smallish phillips head screw. Once you remove this screw you will be able to remove a small portion of the "cowling". Once this cowling is removed this will expose the drain plug. With my enging there was a small yellow plastic drain thingy that snapped in so oil wouldn't run down the engine. Snap in the drain thingy, unscrew the plug and let her drain. To fill, there is a yellow cap located on the back of the powerhead, this is the fill hole. Hope this helps. This is how it works on my engine hope it's the same on yours.

Yes, there was a mid year changeover. The drain is on the right side of the motor where you mentioned.

They also changed the filter. You should have one that looks like a car oil filter on the left side of the motor. If you figure out how to change it without making a hugh mess, let us know!
