I am looking to add a marine band radio to my boat this spring and am not sure what features are going to be most helpful. I normally make a few trips to Ontario and Voyageurs Nat'l Park waters each year and always feel a bit uncomfortable about not having a radio available if needed. So far the luck has been with me, but I think I have pushed it far enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a Ray-53 from Cabelas, and it has worked just fine. I don't have anything to compair it to, but no complaints here. I think you will be happy with just about any unit, the more you spend, the more features you get. I wanted a radio that I could scan with, so I spent a little more $$.

Thanks,

Agree with Flyboy. Good features are scanning, weather warning, capable of linking to GPS for locating you if you get lost, and a waterproof case--especially if you have an open cockpit.
I have owned a half dozen Icom's and they have been terrific. Raytheon is certainly good also. You should be able to get a good VHF without a lot of features for under $200.
One other thought. Get a good antenna--preferably an 8' with good reach. A good antenna will cost about $80 and make sure you hook it up carefully--including a little soldering. A lot of people will suggest you can get by with a shorter antenna on a fishing boat, but the opposite is true,I believe. An 8 footer(that you can drop down while travelling)is a good insurance policy. It is the antenna, not the VHF Radio that determines the reach and clarity of your transmission. And make sure you get a license to operate it.
You will probably find it worthwhile to learn the lingo of proper VHF transmission--you'll get a lot more respect on the water as well as know exactly what to say in an emergency.

I do not believe you need a license to operate a marine band radio for pleasure use.

Don't focus on the radio then skimp on the antenna. You can't get a decent antenna for under about $80 to $100.

thanx guys. The antenna was one of my biggest questions. Somehow i knew you all would find a way deeper into my pockets. Now to the wish books again with a more clear focus.
