We're heading to Algoma this weekend from the Mpls area. Any one
have information on what the salmon are biting on, how deep of water and water temp? I'm hoping to hook into a BIG one. We usually fish walleye but had a free weekend and decided to go for salmon.

Thanks for any information.

You make it sound as if you are going in search of salmon in your own boat. Please take care if you intend to fish Lake Michigan. And, you should check the regs as to required US Coast Guard safety equipment you must have on board.

You do not need to fear Lake Michigan, but you had better respect her.

Good luck -- and book a charter.

Cisco - we are going in our own boat. 1898 Warrior. We've fished Lake Superior several times and are very respectful of BIG, BIG water. I'm certain we have everything we need with regard to the Coast Guard requirements. Thanks for the advice.

I'll call those phone numbers that you other guys gave and hopefully we get the inside scoop on what they are biting on.

Thanks. Vickie

I was out this past 2 weekends out of Algoma. As I heard the radio chatter, "might as well leave the boat on the dock", "We are getting lots of bites, the flies keep biteing us (take your bug spray)." We got a couple 3year olds and a couple shakers. Fishing was very slow. It is as slow as it has been in a long time - very hit and miss. I fished off the rock pile on a SE heading, 60 to 120 feet water. Riggers set at 40 - 80 down. Dipsy's 75 - 125 feet out set to 3 to the sides. Spoons are working, Batman, and pearl yuk. Nothing on Dodger and flies. From what I saw at the fish cleaning area, not much in the way of fish being cleaned. If I could go out one more time now - I would head north out of the harbor. From what I saw of people with fish - that is where they came from. Hope the weather change brings you some luck.

For weather, use the NOAA marine forcast website in Green Bay, they have wave and wind graphical forecasts out 36 hours. Just pick the time and the graph will show you the wave heights.
Now back to Walleye for a few weeks with USFA Team Walleye out of Oconto set for the beginning of August.

Good luck fishing.

Another guy to contact is Doug Schreiber. He has a website www.hotjigs.com with pretty up to date reports. He always seems to be willing to help out. He runs the Dea Marie out of Pier 42. I was there two weeks ago and they were pulling some nice fish from 80 to 140 fow.

Vicki,

All I know is you are 16 miles south of where the bite is on. If you go to Algoma, turn northeast and head for the Bank reef off Sturgeon bay. There have been hammering for weeks, and the Howie Fly and dodger is the way to go. Fish the top 65' early and then work down. There should be a few hundred boats on Sat. on the lake so location out there is no secret. I would launch in Sturgeon Bay and go out and catch fish.
