I have a chance to do some walleye fishing the second week of September. We will be heading out to Minnesota to visit the wife's family and I am taking three days out of the vacation to fish. I have a cabin and boat rented on Farm lake in Lake county.
My plan is to throw crankbaits at structure early and late, and troll in 15 to 20 feet of water the rest of the day. Anyone have any tips to help out a guy on his first attempt at walleyes?

Does my plan make any sense?

I am not familiar with Farm Lake but your method sounds like a good start. Most walleye fisherman may tell you that a good way to scope out a new lake besides talking to all the bait shop people and locals, is to get a fishfinder, and troll deeper diving crankbaits at around 1.5MPH give or take some speed depending on type of lure. 15 -20 feet this time of year is a possibility but not knowing the structure of the particular lake, the depth may vary.

Trust your fishfinder, concentrate on weedlines, dropoffs and points where deeper water steeply inclines to weedlines. Any structure should be addressed. Also, don't count out trying leeches and crawlers on bottom bouncers. This method gets the bait down to the bottom and allows for a slow presentation. I am sure you will get some good advice from others here that know the lake. GOOD LUCK!
