A couple of years ago I made the mistake of trying to fill the oil reservoir in my 90 merc, while out on the water. It wasn't very windy, but the slight rocking made me spill a little. I am still paying for this mistake. To this day, it still drips a little into the spash-well when in the up position. I've tried wiping down everything I can reach. It's a 1995 motor though, so maybe the leaking is just from...a leak. Seems that the older motors almost all leak a little. Does anyone have a rememdy? Maybe spraying a degreaser and then hosing the engine off? Not sure if I should be shooting high pressure water at the engine though.

Oil in the splashwell is common on this motor, had it for years as did a buddy of mine with the 75hp version of it. What happens is when tilted up,the carbs drool out oily gas into the pan,and eventually drips out into the splashwell. The gas evaporates and leaves the oil behind and eventually it builds up and gets real grungy. Best you can do is keep on top of it and try to keep clean. Mine was the old clamshell cowling which I could remove and degrease with a hose and Simple Green cleaner, which also cleans out the oil in the splashwell quite easily. But I don't think I would take a hose to the motor pan, maybe someone can advise you different if its ok.Just get some absorbant rags and keep it wiped out as much as possible. The oil you are seeing now is probably not from your spill.
