Now that open water is upon us, I have a problem with my suzuki 40hp 4 stroke. When it is hot and it seems to be sitting in the sun, it takes a lot to get it started. It always starts but can be really unerving when far from launch. In cold weather it seems to be fine and if it is running, I have no problem only when I have been using the elec trolling motor and it sits in the sun and bakes. I try to start it and might fire once than maybe nothing until I Crank the accelerator all the way and it sputters and rev's high until I back it off. Does anyone know why this is? The motor is a 99.
Thanks in advance, and I appriciate all the info.
Have you discussed this situation with your dealer????
Good luck,

Have you tried squeezing the primer bulb?

Yes and the bulb feels primed, and that is why I think I flood it and turn the accelerator all the way to start it. It is weird it only seem to happen when it is in direct sunlight and it is hot out - mid 70's
Thanks

Have you looked at your spark plugs?
If you are flooding it, they will be black and may be sooty.

Yes and I change them every year. But the problem is when it sits out in the sun. Has anyone else had this expierence

I had a 95 yamaha 50 horse 4 stroke that used to do that. It was carbed and I attributed it to vapor lock from ethanol fuel. Happened a couple of times.

I wasnt suggesting you need to change the spark plugs.
The condition of the plugs can give you a clue to whats going on. If they are black and sooty, then you are probably running to rich for some reason. You may have fuel percolating in the bowl and getting past your needle and seat.
Vapor lock is a possiblilty too as was suggested (but that wouldnt cause the plugs to look like that)
Just some things to think about.
Also, you may have a ignition component failing when it gets hot like a coil or pickup. Have you checked your spark while this is happening?

If you live in the twin cities take it to Mapelwood marine in St. Paul. All these guys do is sell and service engines, suzuki and boambarier products. I didn't buy my Suzuki from them but when I had a small problem they were very helpful in getting it fixed fast.

What was your problem? I did look at the spark plugs they were not sooty. I will talk to a dealer I was just hoping there was a quick fix and it was not something that serious
