What speed should I get with a 40hp 4 stroke Yamaha? It has the standard prop. Any suggestions on a different prop? I only got 30mph with me and a bow mounted terrova.

What RPM's are you pulling at WOT? Also what is the standard prop diameter and pitch?

With a Fury I'd be just as concerned with min speed too, so upping the pitch might not be ideal.

I can reach 24-25 mph w/myself (230lb) and my 13 year old son, TM, fishing tackle, etc. Drops quickly with another adult.

30 mph with 40hp does seem a litlle low but not too far off.

Dealer tells me the RPM's are 6000. Prop is a 11 1/4 x 13

Do you have a tachometer on your boat? If so, what is it showing at wide open throttle? The dealer is telling you about where you'd like to be, but you need to know what you are turning in order to calculate which prop will work best. You may already have it.

It does seem like you should be able to squeeze more top speed out of her. Below is a Mercury engine test with their 30 hp on a Lund Rebel 1625 Classic. That boat is slightly heavier and has an extra 1.5" beam. Their engine was mounted in #2 spot. They got 29.2 mph GPS using a 9.5x11" prop.

Your Yammy has 42% more displacement at 727 cc vs 526 for the Merc 30. Then there's the obvious difference in rated top end Hp.

In addition, something doesn't add up that a 13" pitch prop has the same top speed @ 6000 RPM vs a slightly larger boat with an 11" prop spinning at a max of 5660 RPM. My guess is your prop is not really spinning at 6k, or you have a lot of slip for some reason. I would guess the former. Anyway to have the dealer verify RPM (I'm assuming this is a Tiller w/o a gauge)?

It kinda looks like they put too large of prop on there. If you look for the test with a Yammy 40 on an Alumacraft CS 160, they were able to get 31.7 using a 10 5/8x12" prop (hit 6000 RPM's on the nose). I wouldn't be surprised to see a little jump in top speed of your Fury using that same setup. Maybe see 32-33 with a very efficient hull design. And you would troll a little slower and have better hole shot. 10 1/4x14" might be another prop to try if you had a tach, but I'm guessing you would not hit 6000 rpm with that pitch.

Your right I have no tach on the boat. Taking the dealers word on the rpm's. He told me that this boat has no lifting pad like the 1675 Pro Guide. So it will create more drag. My 1675 Pro Guide with a 75 Yamaha loaded gets 38 mph. With this boat being much lighter I thought I would get at least 35 with the fury.

I still maintain that if you want more speed, you need a reading on RPM's. Three options to add a tach: Hook into NMEA network to a Lowrance Graph for ~ $100 in cables, a tiny tach, or a traditional tachometer. Or I completely understand if you don't need/want a tach. But then I think the quest for more speed is somewhat moot because you don't really know what RPM's you have.

Your Fury has IPS vs the IPS2 for the Pro Guide. Both have a flat pad on the back, take a look. The IPS 2 might have a little more "V" and has some additional strakes. I don't agree that the Fury has a lot of extra drag. I have an F75 also and what allows us to run 38-40 mph is the additional displacement of 1596cc at 6000 RPM vs half the displacement for the F40.

Your speed and dealer's rpms report sound about right to me.
30 mph with a 40hp engine is pretty dang good for a v-hull fishing boat. :huh:
