Lost Optimax Key
Hi, the ice is finally off the lakes, the season has opened, so I started to prep the boat to head out for the first time this year. Of course, now I can't find the boat keys. Does anyone know how to tell what key code would be used for a 1999 225hp optimax on a 1999 Ranger 620VS? Is there a number on the ignition that would indicate the proper key code? Thanks very much.

Contact your dealer |
You always get at least 3 spare keys made for every unit - cars, motor cycles, boats and trucks when you first purchase the unit don't you.
Never know when you might need the spare. One in my pocket, one in my wifes purse, and one tucked away in a hidden place. Good luck |

Good luck[/QUOTE] This may be one of the silliest solutions that has ever been suggested on this forum.:stick: Everyone knows that there is no way a lady in her right mind would ever carry something extra in her purse just in case you would forget to put on your pants and not remember where that secret hiding place is. I would have thought that you would have sewn an extra key onto your BVDs instead. Unless that is, you don't wear...............never mind......... PjShorthorn :rock-on: |
I have found the best place to hide a key is in the ignition switch. There really aren't all that many boats stolen here in the North Country that people need the key anyway.
I would check with your dealer or Frankies. |
Of course I am aware that the person needs a key now.
Having said that - I just went through the identical issue with one of the vehicles in the house which had ended up with no key. A series of misadventures resulted in no key for the vehicle. I ended up going to the dealer with the vehicle Vin number to have a new key made for the vehicle. At that time, I also asked that two additional spare keys be made to avoid a repeat of that mistake for ourselves. Good luck |
I keep one key in the ignition, or in the tow vehicle if theft is a concern .It is on a floating key holder and is labelled. I keep a spare in my boat toolkit, also labelled and on a floating key holder.
Both holders have my telephone number on them. Have returned one key to the owner because he had done that. Seemed like a good idea. If you don't have a spare key, take the vin number to the motor brand dealer and get 2 new ones. |
Thanks for all the suggestions. I normally keep the keys separate as well. The using key is normally just attached to the kill switch lanyard and another in the Plano 3700 I keep in the boat that contains spare fuses, compartment keys, screws, batteries, ect.. I had left them in the ignition before, but when I trailered from the cabin to the boat launch they blew out of ignition, probably due to the floating key chain attachment.
I bought this boat last year too late to get it in the water. The 2 keys came on a single ring and I didn't separate them before they went missing. I turned the house and vehicles inside out again and still couldn't find the keys. I called three Mercury dealers and got three different answers on replacements. One said take the ignition apart and get them the code, next one said it would have no code and said he would get back to me then didn't, the last said to cut the wires, remove it and ship it to him and he would see what he could do. None are closer than a 5 hour drive. This small town doesn't have a locksmith to try to re-key it. I can get a marine three position, push to choke, generic ignition locally that specifically mentions Evinrude and Johnson in the product description. I looked at my Optimax manual and it said the engine automatically handles choke when the key is turned to the start position. Would this replacement work on the Mercury? I think it is 15 amp and 12 volt. Thanks very much for the help. |
Any chance you know somebody with a Mercury and try their key?? I can't imagine they make a bunch of different key codes for them.
