NW Ontario ice conditions?

Sorry if this has been discussed. Just wondering what the ice conditions are right now, has this been a normal year up there? Is it looking like an early ice out or too early to tell? I just know our winter down here has been very mild.

Quite a lot of ice and snow here in Sioux Lookout. Hasn't been the coldest winter recently. No signs of thawing yet though. Still lots of ice fishing left! I would guess average ice out... i.e. not early, not late.

I was on the ice in january in red lake and there was only 2 feet of ice, but then i left for sunny florida and the weather up here got colder, so i don't know how much is covering the lake now.

i'm guessing the ice should be gone the last week in april or first week of may.

on the average..

According to Rob at Cherob Resort in the Ear Falls section of Lac Seul, the average ice out is May 5th. Our group will be a little later than usual, so we hope for a late ice out!?

Red Lake Ontario

I just got back from Red Lake on Tuesday.

There is atleast 24 inches of solid ice. Plus a good 14-18 inches of snow on top of that.

We didn't make out well at all. So much snow we couldn't get around. Will not go again without a snowmobile. Live and learn.

We are having a major warm spell. 2-week long term forecast shows unseasonably warm weather with lots of sun. Going to be an early ice out.

I agree Ben, our road melted down to rock today. At this rate it won't be long until we trade the snowmobiles for 4-wheelers to get around the trails. Slush was a major issue on the lake we were on yesterday, got stuck in it once and was happy to make it off the lake.
