Default Why cant I get fish to the hole???

At the end of last year I was doing real good hooking fish on some structure towards evening. I think they were either Eyes or Perch but they would give a few light tugs on the way up and then just before they got to the hole Biff, I lost them, they got off the hook some how, this happened all winter about 8 fish I lost. What the heck was I doing wrong, not settting the hook hard enough? I was in about 16 ft deep between some humps.

Were you using a single or treble hook? I always use a treble hook. Best thing yet is the jigging rapala with a single hook on each end and a treble in the middle, tip the treble with a slip minnow and you have a Walleye catching bait.

This happens from time to time. I will use a very light line with a small minnow and a very tiny hook. I let the fish run with the bait and then set the hook. We generally fish with large bait but at times the little bait and hooks work wonders. I prefer a #6 Gamagatsu coloured. Good luck and keep us updated.

We use tip downs with Crappie minnows and either a #12 or #14 treble hook for Crappies and Perch, once in a while we will get a Northern or Walleye on. Yes you will miss or lose one now and then but for the most part the trebles work great.

What size hook are you using ? Try opening the gap up a bit on the hook. Also bend(offset) the tip of the hook slightly to the right or left. This will help you get a better hook set.
