Default Transom/Gunwale Tie-down?

Which one you prefer? What are the Pros and Cons on one over the other? If you use the Gunwale Tie-Down, do you have to use the Bow Tie-Down?

Using on a 16ft Lund/........................

Thank you

I am not sure there is much difference in using transom or gunwale tie downs but I would always still use the bow tie down

I went to a transome tie down from a gunwale because I was concerned about the gunwale strap breaking. With the transome tie down, you have the two separate straps versus the one gunwale. Also I can tighten the transome straps with more force. If I tighten the gunwale strap too much, it looks like it warps the boat a little. Maybe just my imagination.

I don't use a bow strap but I do have a safety chain in case the crank strap fails.

Default Go with ratcheting transom tie downs...

that attach to the trailer (and retract). Fast and easy - slicker than snot.

I also have a 16' Lund. I use Rod Saver brand transom tie downs. 2 1/2 years and they are still in great shape.

Yup. Me too. I put Boat Buckles on mine 2 years ago. Great move. No messing with straps, the buckles are always there, ratcheting them tight is easy, unhooking them is easy, etc.

I would do that again in a heartbeat.

Yes.
But the problem with Gunwale straps (the long straps that go over the top of the gunwales) is that ...in time, they will wear a spot in each gunwale where they touch.

They may be fine for a small..simple fishboat (rowboat type) but, I have seen them do significant scarring on larger boats.

I'd recommend transom tie downs for your boat San Chan

My brother-in-law, during his PWT days, had transom straps that came with a plastic shield that protected the strap from wear where it crossed the edge of the boat. No, I don't remember the brand.

We sold (and gave away) a ton of those.
There are a few brands that have that feature.
But, most common is Epco brand.
