After reading another thread about Ranger 620"s spearing waves, I got to wondering if the other glass boats have this same problem. Specifically I'm asking about the Ranger 1860, Skeeters and Lund GL's.

We were out in some decent waves this weekend, maybe a miscellaneous rouge 3'er if you stretched the tape. I took about 5 ounces of water over the bow on that one wave due to the wave splashing up when it hit the bow. Not from spearing. No other water over the bow except that one wave.

I've been out in some pretty nasty stuff with my Yarcraft 219 and have yet to take any water over the bow. None, nada, zip. Wife and I were trollling cranks into a 35 mph wind on Oahe and never saw a drop of water over the front from spearing a wave. Had a little water blow in from the wave crests that were completely horizontal from the wind, but no waves made it over the bow.

I have a 2001 Skeeter ZX2050 and have never taken water over the front. I fish Colorado, Wyoming and Montana and have been on some very nasty water from time to time. Alot of it comes from understanding how to drive you boat in water like that. If you insist on hammering the throttle, expect to get wet.

Ive had 3 boats in my fishing life and have yet to take a wave over the bow. first was a 1850 crestliner sport fish, 2nd 1895 yarcraft storm, 3rd and current is a 215 Triton Xseries.
the triton is the best for avoiding this issue. the yarcraft was by far the driest ride and the crestliner well lets just say you better have your rain gear with!!! Gary

I had 3 waves come over my bow the first time I took my 186 out on Winnebago. That morning the waves were about 2' chop with the occasional 3' mixed in. It was my maiden voyage on that lake, and since then I've learned how to drive it in rough conditions by quartering instead of driving head-on.
Not long after that, I was on Green Bay and the wind picked up. The waves were much bigger that afternoon on the Bay and the boat didn't take one over the bow. I chalked the experience on Bago to be related to wave frequency - shorter time between waves on Bago than GB since Bago is shallower. All 3 times this happened, the bow just crested the wave and was going into the trough as the next wave hit. A longer boat may not have had this problem. |

Perhaps we should define "spearing waves". I assumed we were talking trolling (under 2.5 MPH).
Anything faster than 2.5 MPH and the operator can do things (power, trim, angle to wave, etc) to avoid spearing. Trolling a certain break means you must troll into the waves from time to time. This takes the human factor out of the equation and allows us to assess the hull.

I have a 621, and have taken countless waves over the bow while rigging in big wind with a bow mount. It gets a little annoying, but the bow mount stays in the water, unlike the lunds, warriors, and crestliners drifting around unable to use their bow mounts because they can't keep them in the water! I don't mind the wet feet when being able to stay on top of fish while other's go screaming past while trying to drift. As far as spearing a wave while on plane I have never had a problem.
