I have a finbore III, which is a 6 inch. It is exactly the same as the lazer. It has off set handles which are supposed to make the drilling take less effort.

I like it and use it for early ice which is thinner. however 2 years ago I used it as my only auger through 18-24 inches of ice.

The nils auger is supposed to be a great auger as well, but more expensive and the replacement head is pretty pricey compared to the dual blades of the finbore.

Do not buy a lazer or a mora unless you plan on buying replacement blades immediately after buying it due to stock China blades!!!!

as far as I know strikemaster went back to the Swedish made blades last year, and if you had the china sets they would warranty them for Swedish made blades.

Forget a hand auger and make or buy a spud. with the auger you limit your hole size, with the spud you can choose your hole size. They are easy to make with 1/2" black pipe and a wedge. Or if you buy one and modify the end with a 1/4" or 3/8" die grinder to make 3 or 4 teeth on the end. I use mine for ice up to 12" without any trouble. It is 3" wide and the handle is 60" long with a T on the end and cost me about 10$ to make it. A plus is you can use it to check the ice when you walk out.

I purchased the Niles years back and have never looked back. People wish to borrow my drill because it is better than what they have purchased. Believe the fellows, it is the best hand drill going. Checkmate
