It's hard to give you much useful information without knowing what boat you have and how many horses in the motor you might buy. BIG difference between a 6 horse on a 12' rowboat and a 250 horse on a 20' walkthrough!
Go to the outboard manufacturers' web site and read the performance reports they post. Check recent reports for motors on boats similar to yours. Everything you need to know should be there. Most reports will include fuel economy vs. speed information. You'll notice the best economy is at idle, next best usually around 18-23 mph. At WOT, most motors will burn 1 gallon/hour for every 10 horsepower. |

20'Alaskan, Yamaha 115 4 stroke. If I run around 4K rpm's, I believe I'm getting about 7mpg. I don't run 6K very often, as I would expect to get about 3-4mpg. Yamaha has a bunch of graphs on its web site which lists details such as this using different boat and motor set-ups.

Starcraft SF 176-SC, rigged light, 2002 Opti 150 spinning 21 Trophy Plus with motor raised 3 holes. At 35 mph GPS the Opti is loafing at 3300 rpm, using 4.7 gph on the smartcraft monitor- works out to 7.44 miles per gallon. I think I get better mileage up around 40 mph, but too many big cruisers out today throwing 3 footers in every direction to get over 35 without getting a sore back.
