The Memorial Day weekend marked the opening of the 2012 Minnesota bass fishing season. Partners and I hit three different lakes with good success. We found mostly post-spawn fish relating to emerging weed growth on shallow to mid-depth flats. Productive water depths were 5-10 feet of water. I do suspect that shallower water would have been productive, but a severe cold front probably had the fish a bit deeper than expected. We caught fish on various baits, though the four biggest fish of the weekend (3 to 3/12-pounders) came on Jungle Jigs/craws pitched to pencil reeds Saturday evening. These fish were all in one small reed patch and were the only concentration of shallow fish located all weekend. Incidentally, the Side Imaging on my Humminbird sonar unit was very helpful in quickly locating emerging weeds on flats and the fish holding in those weeds!
