I'll stay out of the Mercury vs Yamaha argument, but you might want to also consider the Mercury 150 4-stroke. It's hard to beat cubic inches for low-end grunt.

FWIW my Verado was a dud and Merc's custom service was lacking so I was very disappointed. HOWEVER I had a 2011 Skeeter WX1850 and I felt it was a bit lacking in the hole shot........until. Until I did some prop work and put a hydrofoil on. Once I found the right prop/foil/hole combo I was very happy with that set-up. However I always felt that the 1850 needed something with a bit more snort. Evinrude E-Tec 150 H.O., Yamaha V-Max 150, Yamaha 150 Off-Shore (when it finally hits the market), etc.
The Verado did have an impresive hole shot. The current set-up on the Skeeter....I wouldn't be concerned at all using it for water sports (waterskiing).

I think they are both great motors, but it's no secret that that the Yamaha is lacking on low and mid, and that the Verado shines on low and mid. The new Merc 150 4 stroke has been getting some good reviews here on WC, I am yet to get in a boat with one on the back. On the Pro-V 1875 if you can swing the extra $$ I would recommend stepping up to at least the 175 Verado, there are a lot of those combo's out there getting two thumbs up.

Between the 150 Verado and the new Mercury 150 FourStroke, I would go with the new 150. The Verado is more expensive and 50 lbs heavier. |

I have a 2012 Ranger Reata 2050 with a Verdo 225 that is very impressive, great hole shot and top end. And is very quite
Just my 2 cents. |

I like Merc stuff, but I would also seriously consider a Yammi as my next motor.
I do like the look of that new Merc 150 4 stroke. I like to do all of my own maintenance, and Merc solved all of the small inconveniences that I deal with. (Changing plugs, I don't have to dig out my manual for gap info, it's on the motor. Changing the oil is no longer messy with their spout and hose idea. I have changed my fuel filter a few times and it is a major pain in the but to get to. They solved that to with a easy to grab tab, and a better location.) I like it. |
