Is there a way to calibate the GPS on the Lowrance Elite 5 DSI. The maps are way off on well known reefs on a popular lake in WI.

Most GPS receivers included with marine navigation systems can use precision fix augmentation and can deduce a position with an accuracy of about 30-feet. If you need a more accurate position fix you will have to get a more sophisticated GPS receiver that uses other features of the Global Positioning System and precision fix augmentation systems to produce even more accurate position fixes. If your digital cartography is in error, you should report the error to the publisher of the digital cartography. You may be seeing errors due to a mismatch in the geodesy of the chart. Check the chart datum and compare with your chart plotter set-up. See http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ref...l#Datum...Menu Last edited by jhebert; 07-22-2012 at 07:09 AM. |

I was in a boat in canada with a hds5 with lake insight the other night and it wasnt even remotely close almost half a mile out. If your jsut using the chart that came with the unit thats the problem your better off buying a good map card.

Thanks for mentioning the MAP OFFSET feature of the HUMMINBIRD chart plotters. That is an interesting feature. It looks like you can conform your digital cartography to match you current deduced position via GPS receiver. I don't imagine the offset would be applicable for more than a very localized area, but it could be useful. I was not aware of that feature of the HUMMINBIRD chart plotters prior to this.
