Well after many years of suffering through ever so slow dial up, I finally made the leap to high speed. Since I live too far from the switch for DSL and cable is not available either, my only choices were satellite modem or wireless internet. Since I already had verizon cell service, I could get their wireless internet for same cost as satellite and didnt have to pay high cost of satellite installation. Biggest selling point was portability. I can take it wherever I go.
My next task is obtaining a special router which will work with verizon's aircard so I can set up a home network. As a side note, if you ever are curious as to what speed you are actually connecting, try going to either www.2wire.com (click on "speed meter") or www.speedtest.net Mike (aka Boatnut) "Many fish bites if you got good bait. Is 12646 kb/s download fast enough?
How about 1516 kb/s upload? Smokin'... :rock-on: |

Boatnut,
I've used a Verizon wireless card for the last couple of years, and am really surprised at how well it works, and it's ability to get and hang-on to a signal. The kids always fight when we are on a road trip, to see who gets Dad's laptop, so they can keep IM'ing their friends while stuck in the van. I'm a roadie by trade, so the ability to pull into the next rest area, and retrieve an email that someone is screaming about, helps get 'er done! HRG |

That's one reason I want to set up a home network. With dial up..only one person could be on at a time and it was always a battle between me and the rest of the family. Hopefully, I can solve that soon. I've been connecting usually around 480KBS...not lightning but sure feels like it after dial up!

Crappie Kid,
You FIOS will be fast for those that can get it. However, my cable setup flies. I feel like I'll see broadband over powerline before I'll see a fiber directly to my house. It would be nice to have more competitive options available. :rock-on: |

You can share a dialup connection or the Broadband connection from the PC/LAPTOP to others with Windows XP ( and other OSs). You don't have to have aspecial router to do this.

I would like FiOS too but don't have it in my area.
I am part of a engineering team that developed the fiber optic transport electronics for the Verizon network. For now we are stuck with Comcast cable modems or DSL.
