Default Huron/Vermillion Rivers and Boat Ramps

Hello! Does anyone know if the Huron or Vermillion rivers are clear of ice, and are the ramps open? Thanks! Darth Wader.

For any other die-hards, optimistic plug pullers, and half fools ( I put myself in all three categories) I went on an “ open ramp” reconnaissance mission today. All of the ramps that I know of between Port Clinton and Huron are locked up pretty tight yet. That said, Mazurks looked the most promising for a CHANCE of opening up if the predicted warming trend continues. The Western Basin , with the exception of the Catawba area, has been ice free 20 yards off shore near Port Clinton for the last three days. With today’s NW wind, several floating bergs have drifted down. East of Catawba looked real good with only a few visible bergs. I imagine though for every berg I saw from the shore, there are at least two that are at the waters surface or just below it that were not visible. I am hoping for an open ramp by the end of the week before another cold blast comes in. Slow and easy if I can make it out with a forward lookout (also wary of cracking another transducer by backing in to a piece of ice like a I did a few years ago) . Safety first as usual, but as important as ever this time of year. If anyone hasn’t put there boat to rest for the season and are going to go out IF a ramp opens up, let me know. It is nice to know there is another boat out there this time of year.

I still have some unsettled business with those Fall - now Winter Walleyes.

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year

Hello! Thanks for the reply. That helps me a lot, and it saves me a drive out west.

The ramp at 72nd street in front of Cleveland was 100% open last night, and there is no ice on the lake. I saw one boat out there. I may try out here later this week, or out in the Western Basin if it opens up. Please post if it does open up. I've got lack-of-walleye fever bad! I too only scratched out a few this fall after a good summer.

Thanks again! Darth Wader.

Hotwaters launch out of Lorain is wide open as is the lake there. Floating docks are in also. Saw two rigs out of there today, but did not see where they were or what they were after.

Two of us push the 16' deep V off the trailer, across the ice to the open water at Mazuraks St. ramp Tue. 12/27. Ice inside the rocks was about 3" thick, we had no problems. Fish in 25' about half way between the south west tip of Kellys then move closer to the sw corner. We jigged for eyes also had a perch rod in, not a hit! We fish on the north side of an ice flow in the shadow, but it didn't matter. Ours was the only vehicle or boat in the parking lot. Had a few lookers. Most of the ice was out or around Kellys, a little floating, just had to watch. Bayview has good shiners. Fished from 2:00 til just before dark. Water was slightly chopped to flat.

Perch at the lighthouse? I tried two years ago on a cold winter day and was not able to catch fish. They were down there but, wouldn't eat. Did you see these fish first hand? Please provide more details.

Alumacraftman, Darth Wader, Bono Joe, Fishtracker,

Thank you for the detailed reports. I'm several hrs south & your info takes a lot of guess-work out of things.

Lots of big ice w of Kelly's? Water look good by Kelly's, Hotwaters, E 72?

Regards,
Silentsixty

How about Huron, or Catawba, is it open as well? And how does the water look? I may head up this weekend.

Thanks! :) ><}}}},*> ~---------------------------
