Funny you should ask this...in just the last couple of weeks Navionics resource people (Evan) were in touch with a few of us out here in MT getting some final insight on mapping Peck. Evan spent a lot of time doing phone interviews with several people and even spent 3 or 4 days at the reservoir a week ago scouting and making plans on how and where to get started. From what I gathered while speaking with him I expect the survey crews will be starting immediately on getting some mapping in this late summer and fall. This is exciting news for all that enjoy Peck!! There is a lot of reservoir there to cover and they want to try to get some of the most active water mapped before the snow flies and the water turns hard!! I'm sure this will be somewhat of an ongoing project until they get it all mapped but they do want to get the more popular sections completed to get out into the awaiting anglers hands. I did not question when they expect to have finished products available but when I get the chance I will try to get a better understanding of how long a process it is. If it doesn't make 2010 map cards then I would assume it is a 2011 project. I will try to find out more regarding this. What I was most impressed with was Navionics concern and regard for gathering information and input directly from anglers that have spent time on Peck. They seemed genuinely interested in hearing what we had to offer and tried to gather several points of view. As luck would have it Evan's scouting mission to the area coincided with the final MT State circuit event going on out of the Ft.Peck dam marina so he even made time to sit down and visit with some of the top Peck fishermen and pick their brains for info to help them put together another top notch product. I was very impressed with their approach to gathering local information from the people who are most familiar with the reservoir, the fishermen themselves. This probably explains how they can turn out first rate mapping projects where ever they go!! When I get a chance I will try to find out how long a process it is from charting new waters to mapping data being available to us consumers. It sounds like an very interesting process and one I want to learn more about. I will keep you Peck fans as up to date as I can..
See ya, RJ in Montana |

Gary... I don't see much on my Montana chip.
They were here mapping Canyon Ferry last summer and I asked them about Ft. Peck. They said... "in the future"...? But...no worry...my friends at Peck have been telling me that the bite has been torrid all summer. Last edited by T Mac; 08-15-2009 at 12:00 PM. |

The survey crews were starting either last week or this comming week Terry. Sounds like they'll be spending as much time there as weather will allow in the next few months. 5 boats with equipment will be charting. Evan said they can cover about 1000 acres/day/boat. Sounds like a lot of coverage but when you look at the size of Peck, its still a long project.

Rob....Daunting task at Ft. Peck...no doubt.
They were here at Canyon Ferry for over a month while we were doing the ramp surveys last year. They were using those ropolene "Triumph" boats. I loved the one guy (had Texas plates). He wore his pants so dam low that his belt was at his knees. NO exageration!! Absolutely amazing how they stayed up.....? It was pretty funny to watch him climb in and out of his boat... let alone walk up the ramp to get the truck and trailer. LOL! Us old guys were laughing our butts off. |

Hey guys....not to highjack the thread...but..How is the water at Peck?? I've been waiting the past 10-12 years...since the last time I fished there...for the water levels to get better. Have a buddy in White Sulphur that keeps me some what posted on water levels...will be fishing Canyon Ferry next year. Also, are you guys catching any fish?
Sure would be nice to have decent gps maps for the lake....hopefully they get to it soon. Thanks, Wayne |

Fort Peck has come up about 18 feet (approx) this year. I think we are still about 15 feet from full pool.
But don't let the water level stop you from making the trip. The fishing is great and the average size will rival any place on earth including Lake Erie. There no place Like Fort Peck! |

There are (were) some old paper maps showing depth contours.
But pretty useless scale. Lots of water per page. I think I got mine (30 yrs ago) from the Glasgow Chamber of commerce. That lake always has likely places to hit bottom... no matter what the water level is. Congrats to "Crankbaiter" on his good finish in the most recent Ft Peck tourney! |
