I'm a noob to the walleye trolling.... Have picked the rods that I am looking to buy (7ft graphite casting rods, paired with okuma 20DX LC reels), I have two options #1) Medium power 7ft #2) Medium Heavy power 7ft. I have the church walleye boards and plan to be using 10lb mono towing crawler harnesses mainly possibly some cranks. I am looking for a bit of input/opinion ....the rods are the same manufacturer but only difference is the power....is it better for med. to "feel" the fish (maybe not so much on a board)... or is a med. heavy action better.. looking for PROS / CONS

Every rod manufacturer has a different recipe for their rods. Tough to compare Fenwick M to a Scheels Outfitter M.
Generally speaking I use Medium for bouncing and trolling. Your medium may be heavy enough to lift a board into the boat. If it is heavy enough to pull boards in and out then I would go Medium. But if the rods are a little softer I would go MH. Medium is what I normally use as long as they are not too wimpy. I have had a MH and it was a little heavy in a 7'. Now if your talking about a 9' rod or a 10'6" you may want MH.

I have (4) 7' MH cabela gold label rods that were bargin bin specials
There perfect I can see the lure action if there straght lined and they pull boards fine Like others have said there on Std. for M or MH rods My thoughts are The longer the rod for trolling you can use lighter actions On a 7' rod I'd go with the MH, if the rod was 8' or more I'd go with the med Also, If you run fire line you'll what a softer rod then if you run mono I myself run mono Last edited by Manxfishing; 03-17-2010 at 03:07 AM. |

Try using DualFin planers and lighter rods.
Better feel and less hassle than other boards. Here is a link to the video. www.dualfin.com |
