Hi Guy's
I am looking at a 2001 merc optimax 225 with 400hrs and was wondering if I should be concerned. I have been reading about them having issues back then, but with 400 hrs on it and it still has not blown should it be ok? I think it was something about them not being warmed up enough and that is when it blows. Thanks Fisherman 1792 |

...and these motors were known as "Opti-pops" for the sounds they made when they blew. I don't think the true problem was ever completely figured out, but many powerheads were replaced- some were replaced twice. I guess the good news for you is that most of these motors that were going to act up did it within the first 150 hours or so. You should run the S/N at a Merc dealer to see what was done to the engine you are looking at- this will tell you if the powerhead is replaced. Your comments about letting the engine warm up are entirely correct- as is replacement of water pump impeller and often thermostats on a periodic basis. I would also suggest Opti DFI oil only- don't try to save money on this. The last important thing about an Opti is to never over-rev the engine- for many expensive things can happen from an over-rev. You should be able to get a good price on this motor because it is from a known bad year. If not, find a newer Opti- like 2004 or newer.
I have a 2002 Opti 150 and it has never given me any trouble- but this was not true on the 225s of this vintage. Doug |

Thanks for the info. The boat is a 2001 Crestliner 20ts as well. I am just not sure if I want a rig that old. I have to make up my mind by tomorrow.
