Default netting lights

Does anyone light the back of their boat to aid in netting at night? I night fish for walleye and salmon and would like to light the water at the stern to be able to see the fish better. Any suggestions would be great.

I usually fish with at least 3 people at night. One it's for safety and it's better to have more that 2 person to talk to in case one dose off for a short nap.

All of us use head lamps. We use the bright led ones from energizer. We also have a bright spot light. In the boat we leave a lamp on all the time for safety so other boats can see us. When we land a fish. All of us turn on our head lamp, one guy uses the spotlight, and the guy net the fish. So we do have a lot of lights going.

One light that works very well is to mount a nice bright light on the top of about a 10 foot mast. Put the mast in an empty seat pedestal base. If necessary, have a welding shop make an adapter to allow the mast to drop into the seat base.

Then, run the electric cord up through the center of the mast. Put a switch along the way, and a plug on the end to plug into a 12 volt outlet, or a pair of clips to clip onto a battery.

When it comes time to net a fish, flip on th e light and you will have nice high non glare lights to land your fish and assist you in the boat.

This light also works very well any time you need general lighting. In the heat and bug filled nights of summer, the lights are high so the light attracted bugs are also high and out of the way of the folks in the boat.

Have you tried headlamps? I fish at night 20-30 times a year and have never needed more than a good headlamp. The LED setting will illuminate the eye of a walleye from 10 or 12 yards out. Always know in advance whether I caught my target fish or some other pesky fish

The red LED is great for keeping for night vision if you just need to locate something in the boat.

Why not mount a headlamp to you net?

I've never try it but it seems like it would work.

thanks guys. I do wear a quality head lamp but thought i would try something different. Walleye netting is no problem but salmon in the predawn light can be hairy.

Default RAM Lights

I've had very good results with a RAM light mounted on the stern corner. The swivel/up/down mount makes it easy to point the light into the water, then swivel it around to point into the boat for unhooking. I tighten the clamp just tight enough that I can move it around without loosening it. The ones I have mounted on my boat are several years old. By mounting a ball, I can use them on my 4 wheeler or tractor too. Use headlamps as well, but just as you described, it is nice to have the water lit up right behind the boat.
