The early spring panfish bite has been inconsistent. Varying weather patterns seem to have the fish on the move from deep to shallow and back to deep again. Warm, stable days draw the fish up into the shallows, but they head for the depths again when the weather turns. Water temperatures vary with the weather as well. Saw a 51-degree bay warm into the low 60's in just a couple days recently. Best advice for panfish anglers is to try to target the warm, calm days. The walleye opener is now six days away and the weather will be the defining factor there as well. A couple of days of stable weather should warm the water and trigger a good opening weekend bite as the fish have spawned and should be ready to feed. As of late last week, shiner minnows had not yet invaded the shallows, movement that typically triggers a good early season bite. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for good weather!
