Default weekly fishing report for western MN

Partners and I fished several lakes the past weekend with good success. The weekend started with a guide trip targeting walleyes on Lake Darling on the Alexandria Chain. Found a school of very active fish on the edge of the deep weedline in 16-20 feet and took several fish on Roach Rigs tipped with redtail chubs and nightcrawlers.

The next destination was a small lake near Fergus Falls fishing for walleyes and bass. The walleyes were uncooperative, but largemouth bass and a bonus smallmouth were eager biters. The fish came on jig/worm combinations.

Sunday was spent on another lake 'rig fishing with live bait for walleyes and bonus smallmouth bass. Though a strong front moved through with big wind and eventually rain, the fish were cooperative as we targeted water depths from 13-16 feet. As a side note, I continue to be impressed with how well Frabill’s various bait containers do keeping my live baits fresh and lively!

Water temperatures this weekend were from 67-71 degrees.

Generally, it seems the walleye bite on some lakes has tapered a bit, but the bass are on a very strong bite. May fly hatches are prevalent now on several lakes and that, along with unstable weather, seems to have made walleyes a bit tougher to catch. Once the “bug hatch” clears, I look for good summer walleye fishing to emerge on several lakes.
