I got cheapies and good ones, they both catch the same amount of fish as each other......So basically pick a price range and just get what you can afford IMO!!!!I have no knowledge on fishing pole or self jigging tip-ups.....

My only issue with the pole tips up is just the inital cost, you need X number of poles (here in NY its 5 tip-ups + 3 hand lines) and then X number of bases also... could get expensive in a hurry plus i have yet to find a good ice rod/reel combo for under $30. You can't beat good old cheap Polars. Remember they look alike but the lube in them is vial. Polar has a good lubed shaft.

I run the polar style tipups. @ $10 or so each it does not break the budget unless your buying 30 of them.
If your going to use them alot and want something that you can pass on to your grandchildren then you could buy some beaver dam's but they are really pricey. |

My vote goes to the Beaver Dam Arctic Fisherman Tip Ups. They're more expensive than most but they're about the same price as a junk spinning reel. They last forever. In my neck of the woods folks might start out with something different but they seem to end up with Beaver Dam's.

Frabill Thermals are nice for many reasons. My favorite is you can stack/store them in a bucket.

The ones with a jig pole are called Tip Downs and are used primarily for panfish but can also work well for walleyes.
Here is a link to the ones we have made for close to 20 years. They have been copied exactly by a company from Merrill, WI and are sold at Fleet Farm under the name Sure Strike. I also sell them for a couple dollars less than the ones at fleet farm. These are a little rough, the ones I sell are much nicer and made of solid oak. http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/Tip%20downs/ Video of my son catching a Crappie on a Tip Down. http://s947.photobucket.com/albums/a...fishing032.mp4 Sure Strike, exact copy of the Tip Downs we have made for 20 years. http://www.fleetfarm.com/catalog/pro...trike-tip-down |
