Default Walleye bite is on!

I spent the weekend guiding for walleyes on two small lakes in the Alexandria area. Saturday we experienced a very good bite by pulling bottom bouncers with Roach Rig snells tipped with night crawlers in the 6-10 foot depth range. We caught a bunch of 14-16 inch “eaters”. Sunday was spent on another lake and again the walleyes were on the bite. These fish were bigger, mostly 17-20-inch fish, but not quite as numerous. They had a real preference for crawlers fished on Baitfish Spinner Rigs and Slick-Stick Bottom Bouncers. These new bouncers, like the name says, are pretty slick as they are very sensitive and come with a quick-change weight snap. Another new product I really like is Frabill’s Crawler Can. This dual compartment container allows me to put my crawlers on one side with ice on the other, another pretty slick deal!

Water temperatures are now in the mid-70 degree range and the walleye bite is good on several Alexandria area lakes. Miltona, Reno, and Ida are all producing fish and, as my clients and I experienced over the weekend, other smaller lakes are good now too. Additionally, a good summer bite is now starting to kick in on Ottertail as the mayfly hatch has cleared.

In addition to walleyes, largemouth bass are a good bet now too as the deep weed line “jigworm” bite is starting to kick in. This is a great time to get out and enjoy our good fishing here in western Minnesota.
