Another vote for the Vrod Pro. I have a 250 Pro on my 620 and I love it......additionally everyone the fishes out of it is very impressed with the holeshot, quietness and speed. Merc requires a AGM battery and I haven't had any issues with running out of battery after fishing for a whole day. Just don't lock the steering one way or the other. Everything on the Vrods is "fly by wire" so the steering and controls are really smooth.......a whole different game than traditional outboards.
I have no experience with Yamahas so I can't speak to them. Regards, Gabe |

Gabe,
How does one lock the steering one way or the other and what are the consequences of doing so? Do you have a kicker on your 620 and if you do how do you steer it and is it mounted on the starboard or port side? Thanks |

I think Gabe is saying to straighten the motor out before turning off the key, it won't move unless the power steering pump is running.
I already voted for the verado on this thread but you really need to spend some time around one to fully appreciate how nice this motor is. It has been said how quiet this motor is but it amazing driving down the lake at 40mph and having a conversation in the boat without having to yell. |

You are here to get opinions and I will give you some facts after owning several Ranger boats. I have never owned 621 only 620's and on these boat the weight of the motor seems to effects how these boat performs at different speeds. The Mercury Opti max and the E-Tec were better the better performers with less porpoising and slower planing speeds. The Verado and the Yamaha F-250 and not the offshore model were just the opposite. Top end on any of these motors were not effected at all by the weight with the four stroke motor having more torque between 5000 and 6000 rpm. Now the offshore model is lighter and to me that would help with the performance issues but there doesn't seem to be alot of there motors out there on Ranger's to get a good opinion. Both of these motor are quiet and supercharger on the Verado intrigues me and there seem to be more Verado on walleye boats then Offshore models but Yamaha has made great engines for years with zero problems. Do a test drive if possible.......... |

when i bought the 621 i have now i based the motor choice solely on specs; i'm very glad i did (about a month after i got the boat we ended up on the water next to the same boat with the motor i decided against)
obviously this spec is tailored for the yamaha since they are publishing it; but i'd look for the mercury version of this http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...2012_18_09.pdf then make your decision off of that |

I had to make the same decision in January. I went with the Yamaha as my dealer basically told me the same things that your dealer has told you. I have been very impressed with the yamaha. The guys running the 300 verado pro do run about 1-2 mph faster at wide open throttle. The hole shot is considerably better with the yamaha than the verado in my experience. The Verado's are quieter at idle, but at cruising speeds they are very comparable. I have 35 hours on my motor and I have been very happy with it so far. I think I could get a little more speed out of mine if I would play with my prop selection. I am currently running a 21m (factory installed) I run about 56 MPH with two guys and full fuel.

I have run the new 4.2L for three years and they are amazing is all I can say. Yamaha has always been known for reliability and there are not many that would ever argue that. Now with the performance of the new 4.2L they are tough to beat all around. Hole shot is amazing, less weight, and top end are all there. If you ever want to talk please feel free to drop me an email. Jimmy.Bell@Outways.com

I'm going with vrod for super charger. We live at high altitude by most standards, 5000 ft area and up for lake we go to most. Forced induction compensates for this pretty well. I'm concerned about the hyd steering draining battery but everybody IV spoken with that has the extra battery has not had a problem.
