Try raising it 3 holes and see how it goes.

Better yet, raise it to the very top hole on the motor and take the boat for a run. If it doesn't work, drop the motor - one hole at a time, until the motor, prop and rig all work well together.

You might be surprised at how high you can raise your motor and still have excellent prop hook up.

It is very common to have the cavitation plate at 4-6 inches higher than the bottom of the transom and have good performance with the right prop and hull.

I agree with REW. Go 3.

When setting mine up I talked to several people who raced boats. They claim at WOT with normal load and trimmed out the AV plate should be above the waterline with water splashing on it for most speed and efficiency. Also other props will work better than others the higher you raise it.Good luck.

I got tired of paying $25/day to rent an engine hoist, so I bought one off of Craigslist.

That a nice lift, I have a forklift so it wasn't a problem. I went two holes, it sure seems a lot higher! Pretty sure two will be fine, 3 might work too but I go to Canda next week and only have tonight and Saturday Sunday to test, was hoping my new props came today but nope. I really didn't want to have to lower it again, just too busy. If it works and I find some more time maybe I'll go one more after seeing what it looks like. Probably start a new "Results of motor lift" thread as this one is getting long and some probably skip over it now, but I do want you all to know I appreciate the advice and will let you know how it goes. I'll try to get another picture of it on plane at the same speeds and trim with this prop, (tempest plus). Should be on the water in 30 minutes.

It should be fine for Canada at the top. If you hit the rev limiter just don't go max throttle and you are fine.

Let us know how it goes.

Default first test

Okay ran it tonight on the fox river, nice conditions. First thoughts were wow, nice holeshot, ran through rpm's and everything seemed awesome. Got to touch 6400 on a long run at full trim, can still trim to 10 when WOT. Stopped and ran a few times, everything seemed great, better handling etc. At speed.

Started running at cruising speeds and noticed I can't trim up nearly as far, I can get it to vent before I get to 5 trim. The motor will "chug" as the prop grabs, slips, grabs. This is around 3800 rpm. Trimming down it grabs.

It seems faster at a lower rpm,I could get 30ish at 3500 or so. BUT, it seems harder to plane at 20 mph, which isn't good for pulling kids with this prop anyway. 19 tempest plus.

Overall I like it, I think! I think I need to learn how to drive it. It is like the 3 other boats I've owned, you can trim them just so far.

Also, I was on the bad side of E gas wise, and had just my two young kids, so with more weight it will be different I'm sure. Maybe less rpm, motor a bit deeper?

The only thing that bugs me is the 20 MPH range, where I pull the kids on wakeboards, that's where I need to see and learn how to drive it again. Maybe the 4 blade I have coming from prop man will light it up?

Tomorrow, I will put in 3/4 tank or so and see how it goes, plus the new props might be here. I'll keep you up to date if anyone cares.

RWL,
Sounds like you have made some great improvements.

I use a 4 blade for wakeboarding and when I travel to Lake Erie. You need one, now that the motor is higher you could probably run a 21p tempest and a 19p rev 4 or similar 4 blade. A 21p tempest would bring your max rpm down to prolly 6,000 rpm

I care, this is fun stuff to me.

Pezman38 thanks for caring, I'm getting into this. The way I see it if I keep my boat for 10 years I might as well get the most out of it.

I have a PTZ4 18" on its way from Propman, I'm hoping it does the trick, if not I will send it back and try a 19", or something else. The fact I was finally able to get max RPM is good, but I messed up by having an empty tank and am anxious to get out with more load. I know with a tank full it will drop some, where should I be testing 1/2 tank? Its been since last August when I bought it that I had a full tank, only burned 60 gallons in its lifetime so far.

Everything was better except maybe staying on plane at 20 ish, seems like the boat wanted to go much faster at the same rpm as before, but dropping rpm to get slower caused the back end to sink more? This was all in an hour and a half of messing around so I think I'll learn more. Hopefully adding some fuel weight forward of the motor will help level the boat and keep it on plane slower.

I wanted to get pictures but with just me and my two daughters it didn't work, she took some but they didn't work out well, lots of spray now maybe coming off a transducer.

Another thing is there is now a small rooster tail, about 3' when WOT and trimmed, for whatever that is worth. Before the water was flat, nothing in the air. I'm not looking for a rooster, just mentioning it.

Default Speed

What was your WOT speed before and after?

I think the 4 blade will help the 20 mph planing issue.
