Default 2001 225VMax OX66 losing prime

This all started with a hard start - rough idle condition. I seemed to have found that issue and replaced all of the low pressure fuel pumps. Now, it will not hold a prime in the bulb. I have tried three total bulbs, one new with the old fuel line, and one whole new assembly trying to rule out the old fuel line. Same result, it will pump up but will not hold. it started when we were fishing a tournament two weeks ago. It runs awesome when pumped up and I can get it going. We had several 30 to 45 minutes high speed runs and it did fine. When we stopped for anywhere from 5 minutes or up, we had to pump the bulb. Like everyone else, we have fishing trips planned so this is a bit of an emergency

Any help is appreciated.

I would first take the motor cowling off and pump the bulb hard and look for leaks. If there are no leaks you may have a bad anti syphon valve in the tank pickup. If you have a remote outboard tank hook that up and see if you retain prime

Thanks for the thoughts. I have tried seeing a leak under the cowl but there is none that I can see. This is on a Skeeter ZX2050. It has two 30 gallon gas tanks in the floor. I have looked at them and don't see a problem. I changed the fuel/water seperating filter as well this weekend and that didn't help. I have an appointment to take it in on Wednesday this week and have the pressure/vacuum test done. I am really drawing a blank one this one unless the main fuel pump is bad.

Still looking for options and opinions.

Thanks again

Steve

getting the run around from the service shop GGGGGRRRRRRRR that makes me really angry. They promise it will be the first boat in line the next morning and when I call, they haven't even looked at it

Still willing to try this repair myself if someone has been through this trouble shooting issue before. I just don't know what to try next.

Just my 2 cents worth but I would replace all the fuel filters and the pumps that way you know whats done, sounds like unc didn't do to much unless it had to be done and then it was not done right anyways http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/doh.gif you may have to drop a few hundred but in the long run it will save you time and money http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/stirthepot.gif

your pumps are #38 on this link and you need 3
you will need 3 of the # 58 Gaskets
you should get the # 16 Filter

http://www.boats.net/parts/sea....html

If your going to open up the VST and I would say you need/have to also I would just replace the filter thats #23 on this link you maybe able to clean it but why take the chance

Just double checking, but #58 says its pipe #6 #53, lists a gasket for pump 1....Are you sure i need #58 and not #53? Maybe its a typo? Thank you, im ordering all of that stuff today.... Im gonna drop the vst today and check it out.... Let yall know how it works out.

Re: Yamaha 225 VMAX ox66 shutting off while on plane (MeanGreenPathfinder22v)
Well fellas, it looks like i just about got everything back in working order. I changed all the LP fuel pumps, filter in the VST(which was filled with gunk at the bottom of the tank and in the filter) and changed the filter in the water seperator tank with the red ring at the bottom, which was also filthy. Took her out sunday afternoon. Fired right and idled out of the river. After the no wake zone passed i planed her off with no problem. She ran fine all day long so on the way in i decided to run er wide open. She was purrin like a kitten flyin through the channel. I was haulin so quick i got pulled over by a marine patrol lol. Right after the marine patrol did his safety check though and i went to take off again, my boat through an alarm. I believe it was the over heating alarm.... I had to idle the rest of the way in : (. After putting the boat on the trailer, i looked at the prop and there was a plastic bag a wrapped up in my prop...... Would that cause the boat to chime an alarm and make my motor overheat? Im hopin thats all it was.......

"Still having problems starting my Yamaha 225 OX66. Hesitates on startup. Have to crank it over 5 or 6 times before it will start and when it starts it has a hard time idling. I have a feeling it is a fuel issue but don't know what it could be. Once it runs a bit (1-2 min) it will idle/run OK. No problem once engaged and no problem running top end. It does hesitate when engaded, as if it wants to stall. Putting new plugs in it again( plugs in it are less than a year old) and wanting to use some of that seafoam to see if it might be a fuel problem. Had engine decarbed/ tunned up in nov 08 so just not sure what the problem is. Looked at the fuel pump filter in evap chamber and it was clean, no junk there, fuel filter clean just trying other stuff and see if it fixes the problem. When I put the new plugs in in Nov 08 it started right up but slowly it went back to this issue at start up. Never had this problem before, bought boat new in 2001( skeeter zx250). Also adujted throttle cable and idles at around 820rpm. Sorry for the long post but any help appreciated.D"

I took the boat to get the seals in the steering cylinder re-done and had the steering flushed. They cleaned the o2 sensor at that time. Do these sensors go out? and if so how do I change them. I've done it many years ago for an automobile but don't have a clue where the o2 sensor is on that engine. Thanks big fish.

  3. http://www.marineengine.com/boat-for...cons/icon1.png Update- Took the O2 sensor out
Update- Took the O2 sensor out and cleaned the "manifold" where the sensor sits. There was some oil residue in there. Took the black barrel out and cleaned the tube out. Residual oil in there as well. The black barrel had a ton of baked on carbon on it so I "scraped" it off and polished the barrel clean. Put it back together and tested it by putting the lower unit in a big tub of water. It starts right up doesn't smoke as much so hopefully this fixes it. I'll let you know.I'm going to run it on the lake this weekend.

Summary,
So, from the other boards, it looks like potential problem areas are:
1. Fuel pumps - 3.
2. O2 sensor - clean and or replace.
3. VST filter - clean and or replace.

Good luck and may your engine be quickly repaired

Thanks REW.

I did replace all of the low pressure fuel pumps already. Thats when it started to lose the prime. I just got back from a long weekend camping (without the boat) I will call the shop I took it to and see what they have done. If nothing, I will bring it home and see what else I can do. O2 sensor and VST

Just wondering though - Would the O2 sensor or VST cause it to not prime or lose prime?

You know the old story about the easiest solution is the last thing you think of? This is almost like that.

It turns out that all three of the brand new low pressure fuel pumps I just installed have holes in the diaphragm. I don't know if I'm happy it was something simple or really pi$$ed off that I ruled them out as the problem since I had just changed them. I will try to return them but that will more than likely end in me getting mad and the shop saying "We don't accept returns on those items"

Hopefully this ends the saga

Thanks for letting me vent

Steve
