Default Great lakes and transporting fish??

Just curious, when fishing either the MN or Wisc section of Superior what are the regs for taking them fish home??

Wisc has several fish cleaning stations and I watched people clean fish with no tell tale square of skin on them to take home, that ok or ??

No need to leave any skin on fillets - possessions limit is two days catch

Yes, you must have a 1-inch square of skin with scales AND you cannot "zipper" your fish until you get to your destination, or else, each fillet will be counted towards your limit!!


Page 11 (DNR website):


Fillets are fish flesh, excluding cheeks, that have been removed from a fish.
Scales or skin may be removed or intact. A fish may not be reduced to
more than two fillets.
• Fish must be packaged or transported in such a way that they can be readily
unwrapped, separated, identified, and counted.
• Muskellunge, sturgeon, catfish, salmon, splake, brook trout, brown trout, and
rainbow trout, which have statewide length limits, must be transported with
head and tail intact so the fish can be measured. Northern pike and walleye
may be dressed or filleted.
• All dressed fish and fillets must have a 1-square-inch patch of skin with scales
intact from a portion of the body other than the

The rules on transporting dressed fish make me wonder if a person should just bleed them out, slit the belly, remove the guts, ice them, and fillet when you get home.

We always just put trout on ice, and cleaned at home. I would think bleeding and removing the guts would be nothing but a better practice?

Of course then you would have to deal with the carcas at home. Maybe bring a few skunks into the metro area...

I always bleed out my fish before taking home to clean. Makes cleaning them so much easier.
