If you come in from front side you can see where hub and race meet. Take a die grinder and
grind a small notch out of the hub. Do that in two spots 180 degrees apart. Take punch and knock the races out. Notch you took out of hub should no problem as it will only be the size of large toothpick. Dave |

in my 30 years of working on this kind of stuff I have never had to use an oven to remove a bearing race from a hub
if you do have to cut a notch it can be wider than that they are about 3/8" wide on ones that have them are you sure you have to grind a notch? On the ones I have done with no notch, you could still use a punch and hit the race, the race sticks out just a little from the edge of the hub so you can hit on it with a punch you may have to clean out all the grease really well to see it if you are still having problems I would take the hub to an auto parts store that has a machine shop in the back, they will know what to do and do it for you for a few bucks

I tip I learned:
If there is no notch to get a punch in, usually there is a lip preventing you from getting a good base to put your punch on (your punch will be on a weird angle and slips off when you strike the hammer). Take out a 3/8" or 1/2" socket extension, and use the flared end (female end) to get around the lip to get a good firm base to hit the race out with. The flared end will get around the lip, and with a couple hits of the hammer your race it removed. Now of course you don't want to put your race back in with the socket extension...always use a brass punch of course. |

Don't use brass it can flake off and get between the race and the hub, use a soft steel bar, the race is hardened so you should be able to damage the race with a steel bar.
