Default perfect example of why you need to change your tires by age

Was doing some maintenece for a trip in a few days.

I have 4 new tires last year, I took the best looking old one and used it for the spare.

It looked fine last time I looked at it

Look at it now. Its been on the spare tire carrier. It does get some exposure to the sun but not a lot since its in covered storage area.

I will be getting a cover for the spare...

Is that a Marathon? I've had more problems with radials than I have with bias ply. That said, I just put a new set of Chinese Marathons on my trailer. Not many, if any at all, trailer tires made in the US anymore

Another Marathon story. A month ago on the way to Oahe I noticed in the rear-view mirror the drive site trailer tire has a real "wobble" to it. did get to Pierre okay and when t the local Goodyear dealer. The tread was "bulged" out in a section, broken belts in the tire. So, I had the dealer put on a new Marathon, the original tire was 4 years old. Now, coming home Saturday from Canada I noticed the passenger side mirror the other original tire was "wobbling", same story. So, I put on my unused spare (a third Marathon) and it got me home. So, off to a tire dealer this week to get the bulged tire replaced, probably a Marathon again, I don't see another alternative any better at this point in my research and hearing the info here. Guess if you can get 3 - 4 years out to them that's about par. I'm running ST215/75R14's under a Lund 1800 Pro-V on a TrailMaster trailer. I like the trailer, just wish the tires went further!

that tire in the pic was old. those tires were well overdue to be changed, thats why I changed them last year. I should have changed the spare too, but i was (and still am) cheap

I am just glad I saw it before I left on a 500 mile trip

Last summer my 10 year old Carlisle spare exploded, and everything separated out. Still on the tire rack.

Zero miles, never been on the ground. Did not even have any appearance of weather checking or dry rotting.

My boat sits in the sun. I have a full cover for the entire boat. For my tires, and this may should strange, I have large portions of cardboard wedged against the tires to keep the sun off. The tires look like new but I still check them. I bought a spare tire cover when I got the boat and when I pull that off to check the tire and air pressure it looks really good. The sun can really do a number on those tires. My buddy thinks I am nuts but the card board coverings ( talk about cheap) really do a nice job.

I wish I could get that boat in my garage but I am one inch to short. It would be nice.

This spring I had one tire with a bulge (Broken Cords), so I replaced that tire with the spare (I believe original to the trailer, but???). This year I had two other tires blow-out on seperate occassions. Both had cords blow out on them at low speeds in town.

Ended up buying 5 new Marathons. I'm headed to Canada this week, and hoping the tire problem is over for now.

I should add, that the trailer is a 2004, but there's no way for me to tell how old the tires were on it (I'm the 3rd owner). I'm hoping they were originals and just lived a long life.
