Not an expert on these things, but I'd think the smaller boards would work in any sized lake, the concern would be weight and pull of the bait/lure, like Juls said, walleye crawler harness's would be one bait where they work well, also Mpower uses them for crappies.

I don't have any..yet, but I will have, and I'll try different baits to see when they can be used.

They are pretty cheap and I think a couple in the boat would add a bit to the weaponry we use to catch fish.

So I guess my confusion is in the setups I have seen where guys have a tower/pole/mast in the boat with a reel and heavy line. I always thought those setups were for planer boards.

The new style is planer board is attached to the fishing line, with the mini planer boards the planer releases and slides down to a stop at the leader, and the bigger boards you manually unhook the board when you are reeling in.

Those are not inline planer boards. Inline planer boards attach to the line. The mast set up has a giant board out to each side of the boat and the rod's mainline is attached to the giant board's line with rubberbands and releases designed specifically for that application.

Inline planer boards come in two sizes....regular and mini. Again, they attach directly to the rod's mainline and plane out to the side of the boat.

Same concept...two different applications.

Hope that help clears up your confusion.

So I did some more searching and now understand the difference. Than ks Juls and everyone else for pointing me in the right direction. There are many posts out there showing how to make both kinds as well as the masts. Wow, fishing can get complicated. Know I know why my buddy keeps saying BOAT=Break Out Another Thousand.

i use the tx 6 church's mini boards often for walleye. the work great for pulling harnesses off the bottom in shallow water or setting them over the weeds with no weights just a split shot to catch the boards when they release. just cant go too slow or be too choppy or they will flip easily. can pull crank baits without snap weights too. you dont want a bunch out because they are not weighted so if you did and turned too fast or too sharp you could have a mess
