Default Our turn to sweat

Last night, the power browned out (75 VAC) for a while, then went completely off around 9 PM. Today, we expect a high of 100, heat index of 110 and the latest estimate for return of power is 3:30 PM. A hour ago it was 11:30 AM. Cause- failed transformer affecting 5000 homes in ours and neighboring counties.

Power is out for many more people across the state due to big storms that swept from central Michigan to Detroit.

Looks like a warm day ahead.

But, when I think about whining, I recall that the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg was fought on July 4 by men in woolen uniforms. Then, too, there are those poor souls from Indiana to the East Coast who may not have power til next week and this heat is headed their way. I don't really have it so bad.

I remember a few years back it was 100 and humid as **** the power went out. All we could do was go by the lake and swim for relief. It turned out to be a big party because everyone else had the same idea.

Brings back memories from my youth with no air and no fans. (I can remember the first fan my Dad boaught when I was about 8) Kept the house closed and shades drawn during the day to hold the nights cool in and then opened things up come evening. Often slept outside and, in my case, on the well paltform where there was some coolness coming up from the well. No running water in those early years but a pump in the kitchen and just outside the back door that brought cool water to rinse off in. We worked every day in it, although more carefuloly on the 100 degree days. Learned to watch each other for signs of over heating. We lived through it though!

I remember when I was little we had one of those fancy double window fans. I used to play with it like it was a airplane cockpit it had different speeds and about 4 knobs and you could change directions of the fans.

I was going to complain about how hot it is...................... then I realized:

1: It isn't 125 degrees here

2: I'm not 5,700 miles from home

3: I'm not dressed in a full BDU uniform & helmet & carrying 70+ lbs of gear having no A/C anywhere to seek relief in

4: There is very little chance that someone will be shooting at me today or that I might drive over a bomb hidden in the road

Thank You to all that have served or are serving on foreign soil under conditions we can't hope to comprehend! This little warm spell we are having is nothing in comparison!!!

You could turn it to blow in or blow out, or 1 blow in 1 blow out.

I am retired now, but I used to be a lineman for the local utility, for 35 years. So, I speak from experience. We felt sorry for the people who were with out power for a long time. Problem is, we could not put back stuff in minutes, it took hours. They pushed us 16 hours a day, no matter what the temps were. We, like you, died in the heat, but yet we were expected to work. When we would restore the power to a block, everybody would cheer, and clap, and then go into their air conditioned houses. Us, we would go onto the next job, in the heat. Mind you, I am not complaining, I made good money. Just please don't complain the power company is not doing all it could. You cannot get blood out of a turnip.
