This was a fun event, it is unfortunate that interest has diminished. Maybe if it was just a weekend where people came up and fished, hung out and socialized. The boat demos and other events were nice, but just to much work for the few involved.

It's a mess up there right now! A major storm went through there on Monday evening taking down a huge number of those beautiful pines in the High Banks area. My In-Laws have a seasonal site at Northland Lodge just down the road from High Banks and they had 2 trees fall on there RV and total it out, those resorts are going to have months of cleanup to get things back to normal.
As far as the get together I think it would fun, even if just fishing for the weekend. I'm on Winnie pretty much every weekend September except for one when in Canada, might not have a place to stay this though!! |

Hey Al. Since it seems that the Winnie event has come to a close, maybe people could suggest places and see what happens. 1860, hope everything works out.

I enjoyed the get-to-gether, just didn't like the location of the resort, boat had to come out each night to keep it from getting beat up and the launch sucked. Had lifts to put boat on but if I remember right, they were over $15 a night, if they were available. Nice people, just didn't care for location. I like a floating style of get-2-gether, but open for most anything/anywhere reasonibly close (appox 2-4 hours away). Al

Haven't heard if it's going to happen or not? I do agree with some of your points. I like the people at all at Fair Hills, but I would like to leave the boat in the water from the time we arrive, until it's time to leave. The dock area is just too exposed to winds at the current location. It's hard to ever tie up the boat without putting it on the trailer. I've thought really hard about just staying at a different resort in the Cut Foot to allow leaving the boat in the water.
I liked the boat demo's, but we could cook fish, steaks, whatever ourselves for the whole group without a cater event. The prize drawings are for the most part immaterial, except for one - Kraig's Rulers. I have one from every gtg I went to, and value that. It's not that I don't appreciate the custom rod I was drawn to win, I still use it, it's a nice jig stick, but it would not effect if I attend or not. Turn the drawings into an attendance prize for everyone - Kraig's ruler... Just hand them out. We have so many lakes to choose from in MN I would prefer a different location every year. Maybe there is a way to move it around on something like a 3 year rotation and then everyone would have some years to travel farther, and some years when it's closer. Having the option to rent a cabin, pull a camper, or pitch a tent would certainly fit too. Renting a cabin keeps some from attending if they don't have others to travel with. Immaterial to the event, but it worked better for me when it was the first weekend after Labor day. When it pushed back into September it gets close to a tournament that I run each year the end of September, and it's just easier for me to not attend. If it works for others - our Walleye Club has an outing planned for August 18 - at Mille Lacs Lake? We have 5 club outings a year - maybe we could just incorporate our club outings into the Walleye Central GTG, and have 5 opportunities for everyone to attend one or all? We kind of have 6 outings, because we also have an ice fishing outing on Lake Winnipeg each March - one a month. Here's what our schedule was/is this year: March 16-18 - Lake Winnipeg Ice Fishing Outing - Motel stay at South Beach April 28-29 - Lake Waubay - Webster South Dakota - Motel Stay in Webster May 19-20 - Lake Minnewaska, Hobo Park - Starbuck, MN - camping June 16-17 - Lake Lida - Maplewood State Park, Pelican Rapids, MN - camping July 20-22 - Ottertail Lake, Rush Lake Campground, Ottertail, MN - camping Aug 17-19 - Mille Lacs Lake, Father Hennipen State Park, Onamia, MN - camping Our club outings currently require membership. But honestly, we just want people the attend. If we were able to build our attendance our board would consider what the effects of changing the program would be. Every year we go to Lake Winnipeg, and Waubay. The other 4 locations change each year. |
