You can always change the prop to a lower pitch if it trolls to fast.

I agree that going with a 2 cyl. and 4 stroke is definitely the way to go for trolling. Up until a few years ago, the Yamaha 6hp. was 2 cyl. They were the only one. If you look real hard you may be able to find a good used or "new, old stock" 2 cyl. 6 HP yammie. If not, I'd go with an 8hp. with a low pitch, high thrust prop. If that doesn't slow you down enough, use a trolling bag.

I used to have a 2hp Honda. It was a great running little motor, but it ran a little rough, and when the wind got up I had no boat control. Went with a Johnson 9.9 4 stroke and the difference is night and day.

I found a handful of 9.9 pro kickers (used) searching craigslist. Searched minneapolis and surrounding areas and found several, I think. You'd have to pay shipping if it were far away, but I think there are ways to get good deals on that, too.

I have an 8 hp Tohatsu... If i had it to do over I would have waited and bought the Suzuki 9.9... No tax or delivery charge online...TYD $2795, I think. The zuki had power trim and electric start. I bought the Tohatsu because I wanted to stay light... i have electric start but no trim (I wish it had trim, really bad sometimes).

I thought the same thing this year. What a pain in the you know what. Darn near would fall out of the boat pulling up a 9.9 4 stroke. Bought a manual lift for a pretty price, what a joke. Not solid enough for my liking. Ended up finding a Panther 35LE at Frankies for 1/2 price. Holy moly, it's nice.

At almost 35 years young, I thought, can't be that hard. I was wrong.

Find a motor with tilt or get a power lift. Trust me.

feklar: Sounds like you and I have a "similar" rig. Mine is a Lund 17 Angler (single console) fitted with a Merc. 2+2 115 2-stroke outboard and a 9.9 Yam 4-stroke kicker. My kicker is "tied to" the steering of the big motor. I'm older than 35 and have absolutely NO problems lifting up the Yam. I love my rig and she will troll down easily to 1.25 mph. One of the nicest thing about the Yam. is how quiet and "odor-free" it is. Oh - the Yam. has electric starting also.

i went with the pro kicker 9.9 with remote everything on my superfisherman 186. SO glad i did, worth every penny.

Problem I have with 4strokes they get heavy! One more item on back transom to add additional stress. My 5hp 2stroke has plenty of power I just never use it.

i had to look at the price of things and went with a 6hp long shaft tohatsu-- it also has a charging system which is good-- just got i mounted so havent tried it yet--- will let you know about it later.
