Arrow WC post reply on Plastics...

Jigs ~ I've been fishin' plastic since the 60s for Bass & Eyes (50 years of no live bait hassles & increased catch rate). For water temps below 50-55 degrees slow down & use scent w/your plastic ~ I now use a small razor blade shaved piece of gulp on the hook below the plastic for 'kool water temps, but I used to use Fish Formula II shad (dry pre-soak) on my plastic for 40+ years.

Also try some Uncle Josh fly strips on your rigs/weapons, they can be scented and dyed in the jar for the Eyes taste buds...

IMHO ~ Gulp is to firm in cold water to use for good action, so I use soft plastic w/a thin cut Gulp scent under the soft plastic...

Also if I get gas on my hands I usually just stay in-port for a day ~ also wash/rinse your hands often in cold weather & I dry my hands on a old FF II rag to cover-up stinky hands (that are not gas soaked)...

By far the best saugeye thread I have ever read, kudos to all of you sharing. I normally fish Caesar Creek and occasionally buckeye and indian. It is great that they have a 15" limit on saugeyes now, I have really become disgusted watching people take home 8" fish. I was even asked by the survey people on caesar creek if I would support a 15" size limit two years ago.

On Caesar there is usually a bite right around dark in the summer but the fish seem to stop when it actually becomes dark. Have they moved shallower or do they stop and then start feeding again after dark?

We normally troll spinners and jigs but it isn't easy on caesar because the breaks are sharp and the flats/points are small compared to indian and buckeye.

The active Eyes on IL usually move to the numerous breaks between 1-4' deep or tight to the riprap after dark to feed for that days conditions, starts at sunset if the boat traffic has been lite on weekdays ~ usually I have to wait till the bars/clubs close(2 am) & the lake gets quite once again to dawn to score well on Friday/Sat/Sun along with Mem & 4th of July weekdays...

I'm a plug-puller whose main interest is in sUMo's over 8 pound & also eat alot of bugs...

I've spelled out your other possible Qs in this thread...

Later Gator,
da old fart

BTW ...talk to Joe Pollock on Caesar Eyes that is his home lake...

Good I-candy for the dog-nites for full-bellied shad stuffed Eyes ~ 'think a long lipped rock hopper 'crank fished 1/2' to 3/4' deep after mid-night pulled behind a I-board following a GPS trail. (warning, kitty-kats/slimers will probably out-number Eyes) IMHO - Contrast for the conditions is more important than color...

-posted 12/22/11 info

The Lake dropped a inch last night & is now flush with the bottom of my seawall boat bumpers after yesterdays rapid rise from the heavy rainfall...

FYI ~ J-9's have been a good addition to I-Candy after dark when the Eyes sometimes shift what they want to munch on. As usual the no-flow channels have been 'prime with the high lake level this fall...

-email reply

Yeppers, for the fall nite-bite my tools for foot-trolling & casting are a BPS 6' R60M bait casting rod w/pistol-grip, a Morrum bait casting reel & 20 lb green low-vis Trilene XL mono.

Also, J-9's req a 'lil more un-tangle time in the dark as they like to flip from time-to-time on a surface skip & catch the main line. But if that is what the Eyes want, that's what the Eyes get...

Arrow I-Candy on IL/save...

"I-Candy"

On my home lake the prime food source for Eyez is shad > even w/full overstuffed bellys the Eyez will top the tank-off w/I-candy (Crawdads) for the old sweet-tooth...

...You'll find the old fart out at night sUMo pullin' C-dad structure areas 'usually after midnite this time of year or maybe a daytime BOD now & then...

Curious how you fish crawdads

I'm a long retired ex-basser so I 'pull/troll crawdad/long-lip rock-bouncing lures at night. If I'm working a long stretch of riprap I'll sometimes run two boards on the same side > lead board will have my crawdad style/type lure (1.5-2.5') followed behind by a mod-RR ripstick (2.5-3.5') on a short leash from the board @ around 2 sog w/the ETM.

Warning > probably more slimer-kats than Eyes & a few L-bass, but on the positive side most fish are sweet-tooth heavyweights on the prowl to topoff their tanks...

molting ...watch the moon for prime nights, but cranks don't molt.

Boards:

Yellow-bird board for Crawdad lures & shallow-water stealth.

OS board for follow-up chaser for RR Ripstick...

Arrow Save / IL I-Guy info...

Dog-days of summer... July/Aug usually spell the dog-days of summer.

The daytime water temps have peaked, the therm-o-cline in place, food sources maxed-out (easy belly stuffers) & if it floats it's on the water in the daytime (both weekdays & weekends/Vacations)...

So I'm out for the nite-bite usually after mid-nite to dawn ~ the good size Eyes & sUMos where I live find a fast break to to stay cool in the daytime, then the Eyes move up to get a easy/quick belly stuff when the lake is quite & cooler at night (your lure is still one in a million/shad, so I like to target I-candy locations at night (crawdad tank-toppers))...

1) Channels and feeders 24/7 in shad locations for the current conditions

2) All shorelines in the eve, night & early morn ~ location depending on wind direction

3) Warm rocks after dark, if it was a sunny day...
