Default Sonar Voltage Reading...What are you getting?

I have my HDS unit set to display "Voltage Supplied".

When my starting battery which supplies the power for the HDS is completely charged (12.75 volts at the battery with a multi-meter reading) the HDS will show 12.3 volts. If I turn anything else on in the boat the reading drops to 12.2 volts immediately.

The HDS is connected to a buss under the dash. I am going test a couple of different scenarios in an attempt to boost the voltage (dedicated wiring from the starting battery, etc.)

My question is what is everyone getting for a voltage reading when your starting battery is fully charged?

Thanks In Advance for Your responses.

What to have more fun? Change the HDS backlight level and watch the voltage readout.

On my older Lowrance units, turning the backlight down or off will increase the voltage readout as much as 0.4 volts.

Your question is badly formed. What value is there in knowing the reading of the HDS meter if we don't know what the supply voltage is?

With a supply voltage of 13.0-Vdc as measured on a decent FLUKE multi-meter, my HDS shows the SUPPLY VOLTAGE as 13.2-Vdc. The inference is the HDS is reading about 0.2-Vdc higher than actual.

The FLUKE Model 73 is rated as having an accuracy of 0.3-percent on DC voltage measurement. The two readings were made simultaneously.

I am an electrician and what you are noticing is probably voltage drop from the battery to the unit. A drop of .1-.2 volts is not uncommon.

V=IR

The wires between your battery and dash have resistance. The more current you draw through them, the more voltage drop you will have.

Is this causing a problem with your HDS? If so, then larger wires (or more wires) between battery and dash will have less resistance resulting in lower voltage drop.
