Default sea sickness

I have been on Lake O a few times with mild swells (2ft) and got sea sick both times. I even got sick in the harbour (slighter longer swells).

I focus on the horizon to help. My question is.....does it go away after being out a few times on a regular basis?

I don't know, for me it does. Years ago when in the Navy after a couple days on the water my body would adjust, but I don't think that applies to everyone. I know, it's a pain, and there is no worse feeling. It has to do with equilibrium, and after 4 concussions mine's not so great. So I pick my moments on the big water, watching the forecast, and, I take those patches with me. Funny, when I'm running my boat I've never been seasick, only as a passenger.

I remember a thread about this in the past. Some people said that eating ginger helps. You may want try a search and see if you can find it.

funny, when i use to race cars it was the same thing for me. never got motion sick driving, but i could not ride as a passanger without feeling ill. I think when you are in command your mind is so focused on the task at hand thoughts of motion sickness don't have time to enter into your head.

Default Here Goes

I know I'm probably going to catch some flack, but a remedy that I know has worked for some folks is to tuck a folded-up paper grocery bag into your waistband so the paper is against your stomach. Heard about this many years back from an old guy I used to fish with. He was a pretty bad drunk, but had done quite a bit of time on shrimp boats. Years later I heard about the same thing on an In-Fisherman episode, and I asked a charter guy that I go with in the Gulf of Mexico, and he has used it for some of his clients as well. Not 100%, but works for some people. The charter guy told me he tells people to use it before things get too bad, or even before they leave the dock iof they are prone to problems.

Default Yep

X2. I have done this with a couple of passengers in my boat, it has definately helped. The discomfort of the paper bag rubbing against their waist and stomache takes their mind's off of the seasickness.

RE: Best/Most effective Sea Sickness Medicine
Seasickness: Kill or Cure
The MythBusters tested various seasickness cures. They wanted to see if any non-pharmaceutical, no-side-effect remedy would work.

Motion sickness is caused by your brain being unable to process conflicting signals from your sense: your eyes tell you that your surroundings are still, but your inner ear and your fine muscle controls are telling you that things are moving.

Test setup
They built a chair modeled after NASA's seasick chair. The chair spun around at 7 rpm while the person in the chair was ordered to move their head to touch tennis balls positioned in front, behind, and to the sides.

Finding the test subject
They had to figure out who in the MythBusters crew was susceptible to seasickness. Adam was a sure bet because of previous seasickness during the Jaws Special. Sure enough, Adam got quesy within 3 and half minutes on the chair. After a half an hour in the chair, Jamie was still fine. Kari and Tory were both fine as well. Grant became the final test subject. He lasted longer than Adam, but he got sick as well.

Remedy Testing

Homoepathic tongue tingler. They used a unnamed spray that you squirt under the tongue as often as needed. Grant was sick within 10 minutes and vomited some small chunks. Adam was sick within 4 minutes.

Wrist straps:They wore little gray wristbands that are 'Barry Manilow's choice.' Adam was sick within 90 seconds. Grant got sick as well. They've gotten pretty quick with bringing a bucket to Grant.

Small shocks on the P6 Accupunture point (on the wrist): Both Adam and Grant got sick.

*Ginger pills: It worked! Adam and Grant were both fine.

Placebo: They told Grant and Adam they were getting an over-the-counter pharmaceutical remedy, but they actually gave them vitamins. Adam's reponse: "I hate this [bleeping] chair" after three and a half minutes. Grant: "This is among the most effective, if not the most effective."

Over-the-counter pharmaceutical drug: Worked on Adam and Grant, but it made them both a little loopy.

Only thing that worked without any side effects was the ginger pill.

Ginger pills: plausible

I have a couple of guys go out with me on lake erie(Erieau) and get sick ever time. I recommended the ginger pills, one bought some sold by the name "Sailor's Secret", he never had a problem again.

I know some people have a problem because they it eat greasy/fatty foods and have a problem because of the contents of their stomach. Watch what you eat the day before and the day of your trip. No booze either, I know a ton of guys who ruined fishing charters by over drinking the night before.

Default Dramamine

I have Dramamine in the boat and have to take it about 1x per year. I take it at the firs signs and I'm fine. I get the feeling a time or two a year and size of waves doesn't really seem to matter. I have come to a conclusion that I might have the touch of a virus and the virus plus the waves gets to me when this happens....because otherwise why can I be out in 4 footers all day without trouble?

Definitely will try the ginger. Not sure about the paper bag, lol.
