Default 2000 Honda BF50 Water Pump Questions

About a week ago I purchased a used Honda BF50 outboard motor with tiller handle. After mounting it on my boat I backed it into the water and started the engine. After idling the engine for a couple of minutes I didn’t think there was enough water coming out of the cooling system indicator, so I shut it off and returned home. I bought a new impeller and replaced it myself. I took my boat back to the lake, started it up and took it for a ride. I still didn’t think that there was enough water coming out of the cooling system indicator, but the farther I went the more water came out. I ran the motor for about an hour and it didn’t over heat. So, I assume my water pump is working and my motor is getting enough water to keep it cool. How come the water stream coming out of the cooling system indicator seems so weak? I have ordered a flush kit from a Honda dealer. One more question, there is a small water line coming out of the lower unit by the shifter linkage, and water was spraying out of it when I was driving. I have been told this is for a speedometer, which I don’t have on my boat. Can I plug this water line? Any chance that plugging the speedometer waterline would improve the flow of water at the cooling system indicator on the back of the motor?

Try running a piece of weedwacker line up the pee tube. There may be something partially blocking it. The speedo line has nothing to do with engine cooling, so blocking it won't help cooling, but will prevent the spray. I had an 01 BF50, nice motor!

I had a similar situation a couple years ago with my 130 (weak pee stream) I took a bottom bouncer and stuck it in a little ways and spun it around. I also took the top off the motor and noticed a black resin chunk of some sort in one of the lines. Once again I used the bottom bouncer and got the resin out and have not had a problem since. Never did figure out where that resin came from. My guess is something happened while it was being winterized. Hope that helps.

It very common for the Honda 40 hp to plug the pee hole. Just run something into it and it will be OK.

Its very common with Honda's period. If you're not pissing and not getting an alarm its likely you're plugged somewhere. Run something up the pee hole as mentioned earlier, of no luck there check the tiny T under the hood in the system.

Maybe Honda should sell catheters for their outboards. LOL!

Hello: I switched from a mercury 2- stroke to a Honda 50. The merc was plumbed for a water pressure gauge. I didn't know how to plumb it to the Honda so I just put a tee in the pee hole line and plumbed it like that. Right or wrong It works fine and I can just glance at the gauge and see what the pressure is to know if I have a problem with out always looking back to see if its working. Hope this helps. Good Luck O - R
