I have been tying crawler harness ofr a long time
Way too many blades and beads in my collection. It is fun to organize and tie them It is more fun to catch a fish with one. The one item that I have been experiementing wiht is the use of artifical worms instead of night crawlers I have used Gulp and Trigger with good results The artificals help with the panfish bite. One problem is that with real nightcrawlers the rock bass and sunfish will bite the worm and get dragged along for a while.

A few questions 1)do you have a color preference? 2)have you tried any other shape? 3)With the artifical can you run faster? 4)finally some plastics float do the worms you tried float if so do you feel this makes a difference? FC

Color that seems to work best is natural earth worm, tried to use brighter colors and did not have much luck. But I did buy two new packs of bulp in bright colors like yellow this weekend. I have had good luck with the trigger leech in black last year. As far as floating more, did nto really notice that at all I just like the fact that the plastic seems to last longer on the hook.

A while back I was making harnesses and was trying to think about various color combinations. I am not entirely sold that the color of beads really makes that much difference, but I also don't see any harm in assuming that it might. So, I thought perhaps I should try to mimic some successful crank bait combinations and who better to start with than Reef Runner.
Anyway, just for fun I tied up a color mimic of every Reef Runner color I could find using the various blades/beads I had on hand - there are A LOT of different colors, lol. I've attached some randomly selected examples. Sorry for the poor quality photo's. Anyway, just something to do for fun =) |

Beads absolutely make a difference. You only need a couple patterns and I typically don't match blades to beads either.

Matching to the Reef Runner patterns is a good idea the harness' look great. I usually start tying in February.
