I would charge them something. I am not a smoker but I dont think just ashes would damage the carpet. Lite cigarettes had to be dropped and left on the floor. It would probably have burned a hole in vinyl flooring too

If you brought a rental car back they would charge for the damage. If you bought a jet ski back they would charge you.

If you look on Cabelas you could estimate the cost of material. PRobably about $100 for carpet and $30 for adhesive. How long to pull up and replace carpet. Would probably cost $500 for total job

I think other customers would notice the overall condition of the boat. I know I look at the condition of something I rent. Particularly to note things wrong so that when I bring it back they cant pin it on me.

I agree with REW. 1300.00 is more quickly recovered by good word spread about your business. You don't want a family of 5 posting in social media that they would never stay there again. The customer is alway right, they say. Perhaps you express your dissapointment, followed by a statement like "please be more careful when you come next year", and designate that boat as a "smoking" boat from now on.

Sorry it happened, I would be upset also.

By the Way...One time my family rented a pontoon....the owner was so concerned over sand getting in the carpet we didn't enjoy the experience and never rented again.

Just wondering, in the case of cigarette burns, is it possible to fill in the holes by gluing in small patches of carpet that's the same color and type? If so, maybe your installer has a little bit of the carpeting that they could give you, or maybe they could do the repair. Either way, I would think if done right the holes would be less noticeable.

Don't expect the carpet to pull up easily. It will take time to get the wood prepped for new carpet. Some of the floor may need to come up if it wraps around the edges.

Default damage

Send it out, have it redone and send him the bill, If they act like that with someones equiptment, you do not want them back.He already said that they caused the burns. Maybe it will teach them a lession. People should be more acountable for their actions period. That was a blatant act.

Very sorry about your experience.
There's smokers, then there's smokers. Some people can smoke and you'll never even know it. They're always considerate of others and are careful to go outside and not make a mess. Then there's smokers who don't give a rats buttocks. They'll light up in your house and leave their but.s in your coffee cups.
Carpets OK in a boat if it's your own personal boat and you like to maintain it. It's hard (impossible?) to keep clean and susceptible to certain types of damage (burns). I burnt a huge hole in my old boat carpet with a spotlight once. I've since sworn off carpet. Never again.
I liked the idea to get it repaired as cheaply as possible and make it a designated smoker boat, otherwise I'd write it off as another one of life's tough lessons because good luck getting them to pay for it because they obviously don't give a crap or it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Edit: Do a search on repairing carpet cigarette burns. Here's one of many:

I'd ding their card for the whole amount to replace the carpet. Heck, anybody who didn't have the decency to take care of the boat I wouldn't want back in the first place. One burn, might be a accident, stuff happens. 10 burns???????????? Blatent disregard for another persons property.

Do you really want to give that group a second chance?

That is only sound advice if the op has a good rental contract. If the contract did not outline what they are responsible for charging their card could be risky. You can't change the terms of the rental agreement after the fact.
