Sears 30-06

YEp it was made by Winchester, I bought the exact gun for my nephew when he started hunting. It was made during an era that winchester probably made their worst M70's ever but they are still a very good gun. I would not be concerned about throat errosion in the least, look at the condidition of the rifle in the picture, this gun does not have thousands of rounds though it to have caused any barrel damage. Look at the crown to make sure there aren't any obvious gouges in it and you will be fine.

The rifle is worth $250 without a doubt, the scope is WAY to much power for a 30/06 unless you're shooting 400yds+ so I would want to get a different scope on it and the mounts are a POS! Get rid of the see throughs immediatly is my advice.

Thanks jigstop.I am working on meeting up and seeing this gun.Ran into a snag he can only meet during the week and he lives 2 hours from me.But I'm going to do my best I really want this.

For $250 ...you'll probably be just fine.

I don't think it is a Pre-1964. I don't remember them using finish like that on Pre-64s .
Plus... the extractor shows when the bolt is closed on the Pre-'64 models. Post -1964 is a weaker bolt...but sufficient.
From the picture showing the bolt.. I can't see any extractor... like on a pre-1964.

But.. if it shoots good... you only need one shot...hey?

It should be a pre-64. The Sears version didn't have the screw in the middle of the forend.

Sorry. I was thinking post-64 and typed pre-64. The finish difference is due to the Sears version having a less expensive wood, not walnut as was on the Winchester branded rifles. My comment about the screw in the middle of the forearm applies to pre-64 Winchesters and their Sears counterparts. I don't think any of the post-64 rifles, no matter how they were branded, had that extra screw. There was a lot of angst when Winchester redesigned the Model 70 in 1964. The truth is they had to. What they changed reflected changes their competition had made years before. The model 70 wasn't cost competitive and sales were dismal. Actually the post-64 rifles were, on average more accurate than the older design. That's one advantage of push-feed bolts.
