I booked a guide earlier this summer. Turns out that the guide used the same technique as he did 2 years ago when I hired him. He caught a few small fish, I caught zero fish. I didn't complain, I didn't make any comments one way or the other. Also, I didn't use the technique he wanted me to do.(wouldn't do it two years ago either) I don't like to fish that way, so I did my own thing. Now, who's fault is it that I didn't catch fish?

When it comes to fishing it truely "is what it is".

Default Great post hawker

Fished with a guide last sat in AK and was not happening for target species.
Guide worked hard at it and at end of day we caught lots of non target but
"wonderful" fish, wife and son enjoyed - everyone happy.

Great post Hawker - your guarantees are top shelf...

If I go where the fish are and keep my lure wet, I'm going to catch fish. When with a guide I'm just as interested in learning as I am in catching. I make a few notes during the day and put them in better form before bedding down that night.

The guide I've used points out fishing techniques and locations for all times of the year and conditions, not just for the day we're on the water with him.

I also don't want to take away from fishing time to do a shore lunch.

The slower it is....the harder you work!

Fishermen will see that, appreciate that, and accept that.

Default Manage expectations

I am not a guide but so many things hold true across all businesses. There is an old saying, "Under promise, over deliver." There is not much you can say or do after the fact to make someone happy if you over promised just to get the sale. It's important to know their expectations of what they want to get out of the trip. If they are not realistic and you can't manage those expectations back to reality then don't take them out. I would without a doubt have the "no fish"/"no target fish" scenarios discussed ahead of time to the point the client truly knows that is a very realistic possibility.
