There are several dairys around Michigan that capture the methane and use if as a fuel source. Interesting stuff. They, of course, collect it from the manure after it leaves the GI tract (from the manure pit). Couple of them run the whole operation on the methane they collect and use the remaining waste as fertilizer.

They have been using aneorbic digestors for years in Europe. It isn't too feasible with beef, but dairy and swine is very do-able. A dairy operation near Mille Lacs just installed one. Once the manure has gone through the process it is turned to an ashy substance that is doesn't have too many nutrients. Most of the nutrients are volatized. The ash does have many properties that enhance the soil like increase water holding capacity. If your familar at all with carbon credits producers who use this technology can create and sell carbon credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX).

This is one of my pet peeves.

There is a dairy farmer east of here that has been using a digester and capturing the methane for over 10 years. If 10% of the money that has been plowed into ethanol was used to make digesters and generators cheaper, cities like Little Falls could have ALL their electricity generated on surrounding dairy farms.

The benefits to rural Mn could be as big/good as ethanol, but instead of turning food to fuel, you're turning poop into fuel.

Every dairy farm in the midwest with more than 100 cows should have a digester and be making electricity.

Evidently, dairy farmers do not have the lobby that corn growers have....

There you go I had a post on here that Cow farts was a big cause of Global Warming.

So turn that into eco-friendly fuel, a double winner. LOL Is that organic fuel?

:)

Global warming is a tough sell when you have snow on the Sandias in the middle of May.
