I finally got my boat out of the water today.
Don't forget that landing ramps freeze up and get slippery. My driver had to back down so the rear wheels were in the water to get some traction up. |

Don't forget salt, sand and a shovel. As previously noted, the ramps can be tricky when covered in ice and snow. Good luck!

A lot of good tips given. Also, consider that some motors have supposedly been susceptible to 'making oil' in cold weather. I believe a common cause for this is the motor doesn't warm up or stay warmed up and injects extra fuel to compensate which can blow by the piston rings into the crankcase resulting in rising oil levels. I haven't experienced it yet but I don't troll with the big motor running in the fall either.

In Wisconsin we are required to have the plug out
"In Wisconsin we are required to have the plug out"
Is this the law? I have never taken my drain plug out. Lund 1800 Alaskan. |

Wear a life jacket.
And don't tilt the motor up while fishing. Always keep it vertical unless loading or trailering. Last edited by B-man; 11-25-2015 at 11:36 AM. |

It is NOT A LAW in Wisconsin...... But if there is any water behind that plug (even rain water) you are breaking the law when trailering. ($240 ticket) Your fish have to be dead too, to be legal. http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/invasives/boat.html Last edited by B-man; 11-25-2015 at 11:49 AM. |

Warm engine up
A local mechanic discussed one motor he serviced that overheated because he suspected it was not warmed up fully prior to going to full throttle. The cold water was sucked into a cold engine, froze, then all cooling stopped just when needing it most. Lesson was to make sure your engine is warmed up prior to going full speed... let the engine idle until warm, then go try and catch that fish two minutes earlier.
