Galvanized lasts a lot longer than paint before rusting but I have seen many rusted galvanized trailers. I guess one could say that they weren't galvanized properly. However, the weakest link isn't the galvanized steel but all the connectors, attachments, axles, brakes and electrical components on a trailer.
If there wasn't rusted galvanized steel there wouldn't be so many rusted galvanized products to cure the rust. |

The two prior boats had galvanized trailers..Escort and Continental...in my opinion the only way to go. Here is a picture of my Bayliner and Escort trailer the day I sold it. 15 year old trailer and wheels.

I ended up getting the galvanized trailer . It seems every thing is coated really well. Looks nice time will tell.

for the guys with painted trailers, have you thought about "Rust Check" or "Krown" oil rustproofing ? My first boat had been rust proofed this way , ran the wand right through the side rails, oil everywhere ! Had to wash the boat right after but never saw any rust on the trailer. It also made the leaf springs very quiet and the axles look like new !

Not sure I'd be wanting to oil up my trailer and then dunk in my favorite waters. Fluid film makes a lanolin based rustproofing that I might have to look into for the leaf springs though. My painted trailer is going on 10 yrs old and still looking good. Plenty of paint chips though.

I beam constructed trailer
I would be buying an I beam constructed trailer if possible. A painted box frame trailer does not look good from the outside after many years, but the real problem is it is rusting through from the inside. A galvanized box frame would not would not rust out and an electrostatic powder coat would be good. Ranger has it right with their I beam construction.

If I were to buy a trailer again it would be an Aluminum boat trailer.
No rust no paint and it's made for salt water. That's what most salt water boats use. If you can find one for your boat. You could paint an aluminum boat trailer if you wanted to, but why. http://www.boattrailersdirect.com/ga...ngle-axle.html
